As poets, we have to be respecters of the words. They bring what is captured in our dreams, what our imagination springs, to life on the page. We may use them, but in many ways we are slave to them as well. They play with us at times, refusing to bend to our will—refusing to say the things we want. They even leave us at times when we need them most.
When my mother in law passed away, I could hardly find the words to pray.
I have stood in forests barefoot and felt the earth move, but no words will capture the shiver that ran my skin.
A sunset—our words pale in it’s light.
In my reading, I came upon and intriguing poem by Jacqueline Berger, entitled The Failure of Language. Follow the link to read the full piece, but here is an excerpt, the opening lines:
First day of class, I ask the students, by way
of introduction, what they believe:
Language is our best tool, or language fails
to express what we know and feel.
(excerpt from The Failure of Language by Jacqueline Berger)
So what do you believe of language? which is it? the best tool? does language fail?
Answer that, or perhaps tell us a time language failed you. or maybe when you found just the right words.
If you are new, here is how this works:
- Write a poem to the prompt and post it to your website or blog.
- Click the Mr. Linky button below and enter you name and direct URL to your poem.
- There you will find others that have joined in…read them, let them know your thoughts on what they wrote. Who know maybe they will inspire you or you will learn a trick or two.
- If you use social media to promote your poetry, use #dversepoets or @dversepoets so we can help you promote.
- Have fun.
See you out on the trail. ~Brian

Brian, I was intrigued about what you said regarding your mother-in-law’s passing–made me want to know more, were you very close to her? And as regards the prompt–do I still have the same 24-33 hrs to complete and post my entry, assuming I can do this one? Thanks always for your encouragement.
brian miller said:
ah, my poem tonight is about it…she died of a blood disease…and arduous two year decline that left her little more than a husk…it was rather horrid…and left me in the end without words…
i found them in time to do the funeral two days later, but…
brian miller said:
and yes, 33 hours from opening…you still have 31.5 from now…
Starralee said:
WOW, I’ll get over to see you later and read the poem–my sincere condolences; and how beautiful that you could do the funeral–wow, again.
About the time limit on the prompt–mere hours?
brian miller said:
ha. yes, 31.5 hours…
i will be watching out for you….
smiles.
Starralee said:
Thank you, Buddy!
brian miller said:
any time.

Nice.. I have just came back after 3 days in California… I wrote my poem during my nightflight.. where you feel a certain detachment from yourself.. very suitable for the prompt
brian miller said:
def detachment is suitable….welcome home man…and i hope your sleep schedule is not too messed up…ha
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
I will soon head to bed… 🙂 but tomorrow is a holiday..
brian miller said:
ah that helps for sure….
claudia said:
enjoy the holiday… when i was in california i woke every night at 3am – like clockwork- for a whole week…drove me crazy…
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
I did the same… but I go up and work… makes it easier coming back…
brian miller said:
ha that is one way to manage it…used to travel to cali…going was not so bad as coming home when it came to sleep….
claudia said:
yes – going east is always worse
claudia said:
hey… just coming a bit breathless into the door… my husband was in a car crash and in the hospital… luckily it’s not too bad though he looks a bit “damaged”

thanks freya…
Starralee said:
Claudia–I’m so sorry to hear about your husband’s accident. I remember that you both have a full plate right now, and will continue praying for healing–physical and emotional. God bless you.

Pshew! Physical life delights in paralleling the spirit even when unnecessary. May recovery be rapid with plenty of time to rest and strengthen.

It is always such a shock when such things happen. But fortunately he was not badly injured. Life is nothing if not unpredictable.

Great prompt, Brian. I can write… talking when it comes to matters of the heart – good grief. You got me thinking – thank you!
brian miller said:
ha. i hear you…i am better behind a mic…smiles.
and nice take on it freya…
claudia said:
def. tough sometimes to find the right words… and then being able to really speak them…
Starralee said:
I fall short of grace, elegance and kindness when speaking–writing works somewhat better for me.
brian miller said:
i have my moments…
i used to miss that grace point by a wide mile about 15-20 years ago…i had to learn how to speak my mind without leaving bodies laying around…lol….
Starralee said:
It’s no easy trick to learn–I keep asking God to do a miracle of transformation, but He just keeps saying, “from Glory to Glory” (that way, He keeps me depending on Him–which was always the Original Plan!).

Brian, it’s a great prompt, but words seem to be missing from my vocabulary just now. I found a new word from dictionary.com in my mailbox just now, so maybe something will sprout from it adter a night’s sleep.
claudia said:
ha – now you have me curious about this new word… i love new words!!
brian miller said:
smiles…i hope that seed germinates tonight…
and perhaps there is irony in words failing to the prompt words failing…
Maggie Grace said:
This is my first writing after spending two weeks in a trauma disorders center. True to form, I kept reading the title as “words that fall” instead of “fail”. I already wrote and guess it could go both ways. Words did fail me regarding my healing until just learning how to use writing to reach places in my mind I couldn’t reach before. I labeled it stream of consciousness since it doesn’t have a cadence to it. Thought it was important to write something, whatever came up. Eyes are worse than when I left but hoping that gets better over the next few weeks. Hi to my dVerse friends.
claudia said:
it often happens to me that in my writing things appear on the surface that i didn’t know were there… glad you found those words and safety in them
brian miller said:
i got word last night that you were back…and it warmed my heart…
i used to use writing in my counseling with kids…it allowed them to touch places that they could not otherwise….
shanyns said:
This one hit me hard today, in a good and bad way. Got the juices flowing, which can be good or dangerous. Thanks for the fuel for thought!

shanyns said:
No it isn’t bad 🙂 You are so right!
brian miller said:
glad it got you going shanyn…so seeding is done?

i am. this is my first week of it actually.
i did work monday for the superintendent on a curriculum project
and they have me on like 3 projects through the summer
and i am teaching summer school…but its all half days
and xtra money…smiles.
Bryan Ens said:
Wow! First Shanyn wants us to think of our words as if they were seeds, and now you want to discuss the idea of words failing. These prompts work perfectly with each other (words as seeds, and words as weeds!) 🙂 Great prompt…not sure yet what my brain will come up with…I suppose you could say that words are failing me right now as far a poetic response goes 🙂
brian miller said:
ha. i love weeds….
hopefully they do not fail and you come up with something bryan
i look forward to it…
claudia said:
ok – off to bed – see you tomorrow…
brian miller said:
sleep well…i have to head out for a bit myself….Coles got a baseball game, but i will be back here in a bit…to catch up….

Good evening, Brian. I have been very busy with exams and driving since Monday. I will try to post a poem some time tomorrow.
brian miller said:
cool i will look forward to it…i was right there two weeks ago so i know what you are going through….
Mary said:
I will be appearing late this time too, Brian. I have my two grandchildren with me for an entire week, so this leaves me with less time than usual. I probably need the overnight to think of a slant…as words failed me today. (Too much else going on. Sigh)
brian miller said:
oh now that sounds fun…are you all getting into anything special or just playing? smiles….
Mary said:
Well, mainly just playing….but, of course, they are still in school during weekdays yet. Next week is their last week.

Ah. So many ideas wanted to flow into this words-fail space you opened, Brian. I picked one for the discussion blog, though truth to tell I might have used so many words that I killed the poetry of the story. I hope not. The people I traveled with that summer severely criticized my adventure, but it felt real good anyway. Still does.
brian miller said:
intrigued…be over in a few minutes susan…i am always up for a good story…smiles…

Isn’t it interesting that for the prompt ‘when words fail’ suddenly all sorts of disquieting, disturbing events crop up in people’s lives, so that words do indeed seem inadequate? Not one to make a conspiracy out of a coincidence, but this did strike me… My thoughts go out to all of you, Claudia, Brian, and others who have been adversely affected, even if I don’t have the time to participate in the prompt.
brian miller said:
heya marina…it is interesting…and it is interesting as well that many of the responses were to the shadows…when at the same time to see ones love can certainly rob you of words…it was that way on my wedding day when my wife walked in…i could barely breathe much less speak…smiles.

I missed this again because still no notifications and not appearing in WordPress Reader either despite being authorised, so shall post here:
Words tripped and tangled, teased at the edge of thought,
not knowing if they should fling themselves out and be seen,
and heard and known, because of the story they carried;
because of what they would say to others and reveal.
Instead they waited, in silent coil, rolled around my tongue,
reluctant to release, unwind, be laid straight upon the world,
devoid of shape and form; made vulnerable and bare;
gripping, ever more powerfully upon themselves; beware.
claudia said:
i think there is a time for specific words to be spoken and i like how you give them personality and how they wait, rolled around the tongue for the right moment… it honors the power of words
