ch ch ch changes, do i still get free drinks when i come in?, i may have to change my email address, keep a seat warm for me
It is an exciting time to be in the pub. The last several weeks during Pretzels and PubTalk we have touched on “Change” — and we were not foreshadowing John Stewart leaving the Daily Show…so here it is….
At the end of the month, Claudia and I will be handing over the keys to the pub to the next generation of leadership behind the bar. Bjorn will be taking over running pub, while many of the faces that have become comfortable seeing on Tuesday and Thursday will be coming along side him and taking the pub to another level.
I have just a glimpse of some of the ideas that they are going to be working on and I have to say, we could not have passed this mantle on to a better group of people. We knew that though, because we have been very meticulous in who we invited to join the team — and their hearts and willingness to give and invest in the lives of our poets have proven them invaluable.
For me, the passing of the torch was inevitable. When we started the pub nearly four years ago, we decided it was about more than one personality and that it would take a team to accomplish what we set out to create.
On a personal level, the last year has been a hard one for me. Running the pub has taken its toll on my creativity and even my heart. There was a time when we had 150-174 poets on Tuesdays and I could read them all and never grow tired. Now it can be a struggle to read 30. It comes down to the obligation that I put on myself to read others and as the leader set the pace. This of course leads to frustration and when coupled with dealing with those that have rather unhappy personalities either through comments or email, it wears you down — and becomes more a job, than being fun. This is where I have found myself for the last year.
By not leading, it will free me up to invest in those that are interested in reciprocating, growing together, of engaging in conversation. It will also allow me to clean off my heart for others a bit.
I will still be joining in — maybe not every prompt, but I will be around enough that you won’t forget me. Smiles. I plan on writing just for fun more and experimenting with storytelling a bit more. You may see me guest hosting here or there around the net, but I don’t plan on starting anything new or leading anything for some time. I just want to be be a writer and supporter again.
It will be fun to be surprised and challenged again by prompts and to see where the team takes the pub in the coming years. While it has been challenging at times, I do appreciate all that we have shared on this journey to this point — I have made some amazing friends here at the pub.
I made Bjorn promise me one thing — no sappy goodbye poems. Ha. No one is dying. Claudia and I will still be around, just in different ways. Hey, we still have plenty of poetry to write.
Next week we will be celebrating the change over and the unveiling of where dVerse will be going from here. Like I said, I have only seen a glimpse of it, so I am excited and intrigued to see it all myself. See you out on the trail.
Much love, Brian

Yes, thank you, Brian and Claudia. You have started a great place; and, Brian, I am glad we will still see you writing. You have offered a lot of yourself & still have a lot to offer, I know. Claudia, I would guess that freeing you up from poetry will give you a bit more time to explore your painting. And Brian, good to hear you plan to do some fiction writing as well. Looking forward to help carry the ‘bar’ into the future!! If there is one thing constant, it is change..
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
Yes I look forward to Brian’s fiction myself… Dabbling a little with that myself I can feel that lure as well…

smiles…it was my first love…and what i was writing when a friend challenged me to try myself at poetry….so it will be fun to get back to it a bit…
and i do still have things to offer…i may just be a bit more selective in who i give it to…ha….smiles….thank you friend…

I understand that 100%, Brian. You know I do….

I’m making a reservation, now, to have you guest host, when you are ready, and missing things a bit.
Thank you for everything you have done for the poetry community.
Okay, new guys, let’s see what you have.

i have one slot booked already but that leaves 51 weeks…or 364 other days to choose from…smiles…
i will still be here…honestly, since handing over the mantle unofficially a few weeks ago, i have written more than i did the last three months….so the pen is starting to move a little more free already….

You are all a blessing and an amazing bunch. Brian, I appreciate you and just hope the best for you and refreshment. I know that …for lack of a better way to say it, feeling of burning out on something beautiful…and walking away is sometimes needful. I have learned this the hard way…sometimes the things we love can still extinguish our passion (my walking away from my fitness career…repeatedly) sort of reminds me of where you are, different but the same idea- I loved it, was immersed in it…and yet, I needed to get out of the box and pressure of all I had become…sort of just be a “no-one” not a leader for a bit and slip myself into whatever shoes seemed good not force myself into the ones I know I can wear. Oh, I am rambling…look forward to all to come here, and there and everywhere! Smiles, hugs, and best wishes for the stories that are bubbling up ready to pour over onto the page…
brian miller said:
yes, yes, you have it there…
i have been there before…and time and distance (maybe one pub stool over) allows us to refresh and come back all the more…or to find new ways to express that passion…

Brian, I want you to know that you have inspired me with your comments and encouragement since I stepped through the doors of dVerse. Your extremely unique poetry (in my opinion) has challenged me further in interpretation and in writing. I can appreciate the time and attention that you must have dedicated to the pub because I am only one that has benefited greatly. This place is part of my heart now. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, your knowledge and for all your work behind the scenes. Hope you find more time for yourself in your own poetic journey and I’m happy that we will still see you out on the trail. 🙂

Spring is on its way – a change in the seasons – the perfect time for the Pubs next incarnation.
Brian and Claudia have made this space a safe and fertile patch for so many writers – my poetry has grown by leaps and bounds under the friendly attention of all those who have read and commented from the extraordinarily generous and talented group that makes the Pub their own.
I am very grateful to B & C and excited to see where this new freedom takes them in their creative lives.
And the Pub couldn’t be in more capable hands – Bjorn will do an amazing job with the help of all the Pub tenders.
So looking forward to the future and the joy of reading more great writing.

You have a great team too, and I do take comfort that you both will still be around. I know how much work it all is, especially for a site this size. Look what you accomplished – this has been a fantastic site since you first began and you both gave so much. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for everything. I could hear you were getting tired and am glad now you will have time to just write and paint. As long as you are still around, I guess I can bear it, LOL. Welcome aboard, Cap’n Bjorn. Oh my goodness! My first reaction, to Brian and Claudia stepping down, was, ‘Oh NO!’ My second, on learning Bjorn will take the lead, was, ‘Whew!’ Big shoes to fill, but we know he’s the right fit.
Thank you so much, Brian and Claudia, for what you created here. I have to say, your own poetry has been a revelation — so brilliant and unique — and you have been beyond conscientious and caring in looking after us all and encouraging us to grow. Luckily it’s a wonderful team altogether, and I realise that when I think dVerse I also think of Bjorn and others.
I do understand the need to step back and explore some other directions, and just recharge the batteries. At the end of 2013 I resigned from being facilitator of a ‘real live’ writers’ group I’d been running for 7 years. I handed it over to a wonderful successor who has kept all the good things and added some new ones of her own. Meanwhile, I have had much more time this past year to explore and develop my own writing, and start on all those revisions I’d been promising myself. I even got three new books out (two of them collaborations) and will be producing at least two more in collaboration this year! Perhaps we may hope that you two also think along those lines? 🙂
Lots of love! Enjoy the new freedom!
brian miller said:
it is refreshing…on both counts…sometimes we have to make those decisions for our own good…and for the good of the group…and that is what it is in many ways…
i dunno in regards to publishing…you never know what the future may hold…i never did this for that…and i dont even write, for that…i put together several manuscripts a couple years ago that just sit there…maybe someone will find them someday…ha…smiles.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Much love to you, Brian, and Claudia–of course. Where would we be without you? I understand the demands and joys of hosting–I can’t begin to imagine those of leading. I look forward to continue as a part of the team, though I’m taking a couple of weeks hiatus to try to jump-start the sale of my latest novel and to attend to some other life demands. I think we all need those breaks from time-to-time. Less costly in many ways than a break-down! Poetry demands a lot of psychic energy of us ergo balance is key. Family has to come first.

I too am seeing some change at the moment. For now my writing seems to have dried up (along with my skin this winter) so I have been blogging less. I am, however, exploring ceramics as a new medium. Oh, Brian and Claudia, I will miss you so. Your kind words about my “poems” during my sporadic visits to the pub have meant more than I can express. You are both so talented…and real. Claudia with your painter’s eye for imagery and joy at the unexpected; Brian with your heart that sees so deeply what others miss and all the great wordplay. (both oversimplifications, but hey, this is a comment) Still, change must come, and if the pub has become exhausting, then you are right to step away, to pursue painting and fiction and family (and perhaps write some more poetry?) You both have done an incredible job, and it is an honor to know you. May all your dreams come true.
Bjorn, I know dVerse is in excellent hands and look forward to the challenges you and your team will set. Thank you everyone for all of your hard work. And now I’ve gotta stop because I can’t see the screen for tears…

I have appreciated this site so much for the past 4 years or so… I consider dVerse an extraordinary place and am so grateful to you, Brian & Claudia,
for your very capable, kind and staunch support. I am not surprised to learn of the changing of the guard as I sensed it was coming awhile ago. You both put your heart and soul into dVerse. We all will adapt.
I know Bjorn will handle the sight with aplomb and I look forward to the new changes as well as seeing the two of you return, of course. Some writers gravitate to other sites like Imaginary Toads, Poets United, and other venues depending on time, skill level, style, taste, prompts. Personally, I wish I had more time and energy to invest here and in other writing projects. There is only so much room on one’s plate at any given time.
One thing I hope for in the newer version of dVerse is that there might be a time set aside for critiquing..I mean the real nitty, gritty, but I realize that it takes time from the leaders. And did I miss the info about the 2014 Anthology..was it ever completed?
Thanks, all.

i doubt you will ever see true critque in a public forum…if you want it…i suggest starting it…if there is someone you think would be good….begin to leave substantial and specific comments at their place and you will more likely receive them in return…everyone wants critique but seldom want to give it in return…(that is not a slight at you, just a reality with most)…
check your email on anthology news…

When I first saw this on my dashboard & head on to read… I said to myself I will not say a word here… because of all the people behind the bar today you two, Claudia & Brian, are the least or almost I didn’t expect to leave…. this is just so sad… i know i shouldn’t be coz i will still be seeing you both somewhere… but, i don’t know… maybe because you two often inspire me with your dedication & energy to gather people together & encourage them greatly, in which i often lack. But then change are due to come anytime. I can only wish you, Brian & Claudia, happiness in whatever you desire in life & choose to do. There’s no denying that I owe a part of what & who I am today to both of you… from the day i first encountered you both, to the day you asked me to join the pub, ’til i decided to leave without giving any reasons.. and still up to now your there to support me… Thank you Brian… thank you Claudia… I may not be always present in all the occassions here in the pub & in your lives… know that I don’t forget my friends. My presence may not be felt most of the time… but i’m always watching my friends from far miles away. Goodluck to both of you, dear friends.

Brian and Claudia thank you so much. You will surely be missed. I know this has to be a huge commitment though. I can’t even manage to write something and link up each time, let alone all that you guys do, er … did. I’m glad you’ll still be around and with the extra time you have I hope you get to do fun things like sleep, or even see your family!
Bjorn – congratulations! I’m sure you will be a great barkeep.
All the best, and I’d like to raise my glass and make a toast to beginnings and endings and to all of you!

Best of heartfelt wishes to you and Claudia, Brian. You did a wonderful and amazing thing here, and one you can always be proud to have been a part of, as I am for my brief stint way back when One Stop sank and no one knew what the poetry blogosphere would do without it. I know how difficult the job can be, and I am glad you found the right people to carry on. But when it’s time to move on, it’s time to move on. Congrats to Bjorn and the new staff, and good luck to all.

Many thanks, Brian and Claudia, for the cool ride you’ve given us on dVerse. Your guidance and supportive comments have been invaluable to the many dVersers who’ve followed you and benefitted from your creativity.
Now we move on and look forward to Bjorn’s most capable hand on the wheel and to your continued involvement with the wonderful community you founded.

Brian and Claudia, you’ve done a fantastic job at the helm, bringing dVerse from it’s fledgling days to now. Bjorn is an excellent voice to take over the helm and I look forward to seeing what the new voices bring to the pub. While hearing your unique voices regularly will be missed, I’m glad they will not be gone altogether.
claudia said:
yeah – i know björn will do a great job – and he has a wonderful team to support him as well.. and for me – it will be interesting to greet people from the other side of the bar…smiles

I’m new and not a regular here, yet, but the little bit of I’ve gotten to know of Claudia and Brian has helped me to not be so afraid to branch out with my writing, always kinda keeping it close to the vest. I think it is good the two of you can step away for a bit and get parts of yourselves back, do some exploring, and still drop in and visit! All positive things. And with Bjorn and Anthony now behind the bar, this interesting duo I’m sure will start some new trends in mixology along with serving up the old favorites. There is so much talent here and I frequently feel, outgunned, but it’s good to grow and stretch. I am looking forward to this new phase. I wish the whole crew the best and brightest.

mixolog – i like that… a bit of the old – a bit of the new… it’s going to be an exciting mix me thinks… smiles

I love it that the change of guards is a smooth and well anticipated event. You have been a rock! And I look forward to your storytelling 🙂 I have always taken the road to come back to the trail when I can, and therefore, try to give a bit of myself to dversepoets only when I have the time to do so, in the capacity that I can. So I can understand how it must feel like when the expectation weighs you down. I know we will continue to visit each other. Love to you and the family…
Claudia,
Thank you for adding a lilt to the world of poetry that I know. Your quirkiness and stories of far off places and off beat meetings are to die for, and I am a bit sad that both of you are leaving the bridge at the same time…I am left wondering about your daughter – how are you coping with her being away, for it is a difficult time for me adjusting to growing up daughters, writing and work.
Bless both of you!

smiles. we will def be seeing each other around ninot…
love back

We’ve all been together for a while. We’ve become wonderful friends through our poetry and I don’t expect to lose that. I will still be doing some articles on Form and possibly other things I fancy, but time takes its toll.
I have been more absent than present for the last year and I never could quite keep up with B and C on all their reading and commenting. I spend a lot of time on every poem usually and rushing through makes me leave comments that are not well thought out or cogent. I still love to read my fellow poets though – they have brought me so many different canvases of their imagination and creativity, so many new ways to consider poetry.
Thank you Claudia and Brian and all the poets who have been on this amazing journey with us. I miss the ones who fell away, but I try to read them in other venues when I can. So not goodbye, but happy new adventures!
