5-4-3-2-1 !!!! Happy 5th anniversary D’verse!
We are rolling out the red carpet for you with 5 special interviews and poetry prompts from today until Friday. It’s going to be a poetry feast, filled with nostalgia and fun as we celebrate 5 years of kinship in this unique community of poets.
For the first day of the week’s celebration, here is a short interview with our co-founder of D’verse, Brian Miller of WayStationOne. He was featured here in November 2012 interview for those who are new to the pub. Brian is currently in hiatus from writing.
What are you currently preoccupied with (e.g. books currently reading, music, hobbies, etc.)?
It’s been a bit since I ducked into the pub – so thanks for inviting me back. It’s not that I want to be away, as much as it is that I need to be away. For many years, my life was out of balance with writing and the relationships that I developed online – and there were other priorities in my life that needed tending.
Any memorable events or milestones that you would like to share with us?
In May 2016, I graduated with my Master’s degree in teaching. I am still teaching at the high school, investing time in the next generation. It was a better year this year, from the stand point of we only had 2 student deaths. That is the lowest amount in the four years I have been teaching. I am seeing more and more of the delinquents that I work with that are turning their lives around.
At the beginning of June, I left for Nepal. Chances are as you are reading this, I am just getting back. I have been teaching at a seminary in the mornings – with a group of 8 pastors, preparing them to start churches in Nepal. In the afternoons, I have been working in the local elementary school with K-2nd graders.
Students that want to go beyond 2nd grade have to hike many hours to and from school, so most do not even go, but work to feed their families or on the home front. I took several computers to they can set up a lab where they can do modules (locally) and have the opportunity to learn.
Earlier this year, I worked with a heroin addict – he was just a teen, so struggling in life. We walked together for a while, got him reconnected with his family. Unfortunately he was not completely ready to give it up — and fell apart. I dont know where he is now, but I think of him often. Perhaps he is me, one decision different you know. It’s why I do what I do.
There are so many reasons not to – like, the lack of toilet paper in Nepal (your left hand is your “dirty” hand), that the toilet is a hole in the ground, that there is no air, and the power is often out (if you have power) – so no fan either, its hot, you eat with your fingers (only use your right hand), you have to walk 5.7 miles one way, just to get to the school from where you are staying, you have to boil water and then run it through a filter, you might die of a lot of diseases that you can not even spell — or — the heroin addict might break your heart, call you in the middle of the night, steal money, curse at you, spit on you and argue about the stupidest things —
but one thing I know — WHEN YOU GET OVER YOURSELF, you can really see and love people.
And that goes for writing too.
I do still write on occassion. Mostly ramblings in my notebook, and I have sent a few to Claudia on rare occassions. Sorry C. There is so much inspiration around, I should catch more of it. I am just trying to live life as it comes now, and capture the moments in new ways.
To a new poet or writer, what lessons or insights would you like to share?
If you are new to writing, capture what you know, what you see – it will write the poetry for you. And dont get so consumed by entertaining and audience that you lose who you are. Write out of the overflow of your life. And when it becomes a chore, walk away. It will be there when you return. And if it is not, it was not meant to be.
As to what projects I have coming up, I have to put a new sewer line in at the house – and I am considering where I will be sent next — i think I owe my family a few games of nerf guns. So that is where I will be for the next little bit. If you happen to stop in, we will let you borrow one.
All the pictures featured here are by Brian Miller in Nepal. Thank you Brian for allowing us to catch up with you in your new journey.
Are you ready to celebrate with us ? Here’s a short poetry prompt – in Quadrille stye, in 44 words exactly, write a poem or prose, with the word JOURNEY.
This word can mean many things – a period of travel, passage or progress from one stage to another. This can be an exciting time if one is going to a new country or city or a sad one if its the final journey from life. This brings me to share with you the sad news of one of our regular members, Viv or Vivinfrance. She sadly passed away on July 5, 2016. Our heartfelt condolences to the family.
If you are joining in our celebration:
See you at the poetry trail. And come back tomorrow for another special interview and prompt 🙂

Happy 5th anniversary everyone!!!! Please join us for this week’s celebration!!!!
Mish said:
Hello Grace! Thanks-you for the champagne….woo hoo!!
Congrats to all that have contributed so much to dVerse over these five years. An enlightening and uplifting interview, Grace.
Brian’s talent and personality stood out to me right away when I first arrived in the dVerse community. Thank you Brian for all of your inspiration and encouragement when I first began to pull up a chair here…but most of all, thanks for making a meaningful difference in this world.

arriving as a new birth? or coming to visit?
Mish said:
Hey Brian!! 🙂 Nice to see you.
She is coming to visit….haha, should have specified that. She is 14 and lives in California with her mom. Although she is my “step” grand daughter, I have loved her since birth. We haven’t seen her since she was 12 , so we’re looking forward to reconnecting with our little lady. She is very interested in science, space and art so I’ve been planning accordingly! 🙂
brian miller said:
Nice. Sounds like you will be having fun over the next little bit…and after 2 years you will have plenty of catching up to do…have fun…you will make some amazing memories I am sure.
Mish said:

Hi Brian, I have missed you. So happy you are well!
The Course of Our Seasons said:
I just popped by to say congratulations and hello. Especially nice to hear from Brian. He allowed me to lurk a bit around the edges of the pub until I had enough confidence to step in the door. I know I am a better writer because of Brian, Claudia, Bjorn and all the poets that welcomed me with elbow nudges and kind criticism. And Brian, you know you always have a friend in the Ozarks – all the best to you and your beautiful family. And here’s to more wonderful writing in the Pubs future – happy anniversary!
brian miller said:
I feel so bad. You emailed me a month or so ago, but I was so wrapped up in preparing for my trip to Nepal, I dont think I ever responded.
I would def love to make it back to your mountains again sometime. And if I do, you know I will look you up!
The Course of Our Seasons said:
No worries, my friend – just wanted to not lose touch. We are in NC this week – home by the weekend. Take care
brian miller said:
Ah I wish I would have known. We are 90 minutes from Greensboro…are you at the beach? We are getting away to a little fishing village down there next week…just a quiet little time exploring a new place…
The Course of Our Seasons said:
We are visiting Bob’s fam in Goldsboro, in Apex Wed nite, Statesville Thurs nite then homeward on Fri. We spent last week in Daytona Beach with my brother & fam. Where are you near Greensboro? Maybe we could figure out lunch or at least a drive-by hugging as we say in our fam.
Brian Miller said:
I am north…it would be way out of the way of your path…if I did not have summer school I would catch you while you swing by. I am sure our pathes will cross again someday
Victoria C. Slotto said:
Brian, you bring tears to my eyes. What a wonderful journey you are taking–we cannot grudge you that here at the most special poetry community you founded with Claudia. Thank you for all you do for our poor world and for those student who are in such need of someone like you. When you are my age you will look back on life, find time and so much inspiration in what you are doing now, put pen to paper and share poetry that will continue to make a difference in the lives of others.
Thank you, Grace and welcome back everyone.
Grace said:
His journey is amazing and I am sure will be unforgettable to this students and all the people he has encountered in Nepal. Great to see you again Victoria!!!
Victoria C. Slotto said:
Happy to see you, too, Grace…and everyone!
kanzensakura said:
Hugs Victoria! So great to see you again. And to see your sweet face on FB at Lake Tahoe. I smiled and smiled.
Victoria C. Slotto said:
Wish everyone could have been there! Hugs, back.
Mish said:
Hi Victoria! Sounds like you had a wonderful time. How nice it must have been to meet up in person with a fellow pub tender.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
Yes.. I agree.. I have considered switching to be a teacher as well… and I cannot deny that Brian is part of my inspiration.
Victoria C. Slotto said:
You are a teacher in many ways, Bjorn!
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
Ha.. it would be great to be able to reach out to teenagers… and schools here are in dire need for teachers in math and physics…
brian miller said:
Oh you would love it!
I would not change up for the world.
I get to hang out with kids and shape their lives. What more can you ask for?
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
I agree.. i think a life as rich as Brian’s does make you want to do more with your life.
brian miller said:
Lets clarify….dont be a teacher if you want to be rich….haha…at least not monetarily…but it def has its treasures….
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
I think I could manage… but we will see… I can see myself a science teacher… 🙂 but it would mean going back to university..
brian miller said:
Science is so much fun. So much hands on activity…and you can blow stuff up…
If I was not math I would be Science. I am certified in one Science, so if I ever get tired of it, I can switch over there.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
Ah… I’m luckier than you, I actually love math.
brian miller said:
Maybe i will write again then V. Smiles. I actually wrote 3 poems in the last week. Just keeping them to myself though. Don’t be surprised though if you see a poem by me later in the week. Just saying.
I love life. I swapped emails with some of the guys I met in Nepal over the last couple days. I miss them so much. I look forward to going back next summer – 6 weeks this time. The intent is to teach at the seminary and then run teacher trainings for the teachers there…and I will goof around int he classroom as well – but mainly coaching the teachers.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
I think that writing for yourself sounds perfect… some day I will do the same.
Grace said:
How exciting for you Brian and I can only imagine, a life -changing experience for both you and your students/people.
Victoria C. Slotto said:
Wonderful mission, Brian. And it’s good to keep some poems for our eyes only. Just think of what happened to Emily Dickinson’s. Glad to have you hanging with us today and maybe later in the week. It’s always a joy.
kanzensakura said:
Hello. It is super to be back in the Poets Pub and imbibing all the amazing talent. I visited several Poetry Communities to keep my hand in. I found different ways to submit poetry, looked at average number of people who contributed, how they commented (if they did), how visitors were treated, interesting prompts. It was a fun time but it is good to be back home at dVerse. Love this interview with Brian. Miss him greatly but so admire all he is doing to make this world better.
Grace said:
Each community is special, smiles but D’verse is specially close as it is home to many poets.
As I look back on the 5 years, we have seen a lot of people come and go, and that includes poets like Viv who have died sadly. But their words and posts are forever scribbled in the walls of D’verse.
Great to see you again Toni!!!
kanzensakura said:
Great to see you Grace! I think dVerse is very special. I miss Brian and his great talent but am so glad he is using it in so many positive ways. Grateful he is in this world of ours.
Grace said:
I miss Brian’s mentoring and support but I was very lucky to have known and followed his work since he and Claudia founded D’verse.
Also, I so admire people who can give a lot to make our world a better place.
kanzensakura said:
Indeed. I think we try in our various ways to help and make things better. By the time I got to dVerse, he had basically signed off although writing as Z. I have heard so many incredible things of him.
brian miller said:
As shucks….I am never too far away…
just an email. Smiles.
I have to admit, it has been refreshing just switching up where I was investing my time. But I have recently begun writing again — very little and keeping it to myself mostly, but…
kanzensakura said:
Whenever you feel like sharing somethjng, we will be happy. I must say I miss your behind the scenes helping me out when I first signed on to dVerse. It warms my heart the goodnesd you share out in the world. I understand your prioroties and the why of them. I do admire your choices. But…..a poem once in a blue moon would be so great. I learned this past year when to back off and chill, that I don’t have to write every day or keep a journal. The sudden death of a friend last year affected me deeply and the lessons from it and her life. Someone online asked me a coupple of mmonths ago, didn’t you use to write poetry? Took me aback. So, I’m working on my skills and observations again. Yeah, I used to write poetry. You are missed.
brian miller said:
I am sorry to hear about your loss – but I am glad it gave you pause to reflect and to appreciate the life that they shared.
I wont make you wait too long…tomorrow perhaps I will share a poem. Smiles.

Wonderful to read what is up with Brian. I know he will take from his experience what he needs, and always gives more in return. I miss his posts, and his comments. He is a one of a kind. Just an all around good guy….I hold a place for him, and await his return.
annell4 said:
I want to write about the journey so far, but I don’t know if I will follow your instructions….
Grace said:
Hi Annell! We have 5 days of writing prompts, from today until Friday.
Hopefully a prompt will speak to you, smiles.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
I hope you find your own way to write to the rules annell .. great to have you around.
brian miller said:
Hey annell…how are you. I have thought of you periodically…
Maybe one day I will to some extent…
I have plenty to write now.
I wrote a journal while I was gone. It was over 100 pages of just odds and ends of the journey. It was really cool.
The craziest story was trying to get back into the country. I def have to tell that one some time. Ha.

Great to have you with us and leading us beyond 5 years Bjorn!!!

Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
It’s been a lot cold winds and some rain… not really summer at the moment… but this is how it is…
brian miller said:
way too hot here. over 100 today. the pool way nice, but then the thunderstorms rolled in and they kicked us out, but it never rained…so no relief for the melting.
Grace said:
We are blessed with good summer with a little clouds and rains. But I can relate to the extreme heat as I just arrived back from California last week. It hardly rained there due to the drought, so the heat in midday was too much. Good to jump into the pool, smiles.
Imelda said:
Happy anniversary! I am most glad to see the pub open once more and to hear from Brian. What great work he is doing. Really fascinating to read all your news. What a journey! Sadly or gladly your description of being in Nepal reminds me of my time there many years ago! Happy anniversary Dverse!
brian miller said:
Ah, cool to know that you have been there. What a fascinating place, on so many levels. We are so blessed in all we have but you know what — I dont know that they miss it. They have something we have forgotten — and the relationships to others around them, and even guests seems so much more important. I talked to so many people every day — and got invited in for tea, even though we could not speak the same language…but we found a way.
navasolanature said:
Yes, I think that is so genuine about people in Nepal and why I am partly glad some things don’t change. However, better sanitation and health care can help.
brian miller said:
haha. it definitely took some…getting used to.
“Where is the toilet paper?”
“And why is there a bucket of water here?”
Oh my. Lol.
Health care for sure. That was one of the reasons I went. I took the place of a family that live there full time, and they were having a baby. They came back to the states to have the baby, due to the healthcare.
Grace said:
Hygiene and sanitation would be a shocker for some not used to the living conditions of other countries. But having a toilet paper is a must for me, smiles.
brian miller said:
You would be surprised what you can get used to. If only for a month or so. Ha. Trust me, I cried when I had my first warm shower in over a month…terribly coddled.
kim881 said:
Congratulations on the 5th anniversary of dVerse Poets and thank you to Grace for kicking it off with the interview with Brian Miller. As someone who is still fairly new to dVerse, I didn’t know anything about Brian, so I was very interested in what he has to say, particularly about his time in Nepal.
I would like to dedicate my quadrille to Viv, a fine poet and patchworker, who will be sadly missed.
brian miller said:
Hola.
Well now we have met. And welcome to dVerse…been a while since I got to say that.
It was def sad to hear about Viv’s passing. She was a special woman.

Happy Anniversary, dVerse! Yay! (Those five years went by so fast!) Brian, I am thrilled to hear from you, and to know your time in Nepal was so wonderful. You are using your life to do so much good in the world. You have such a good heart. I perked up at those 100 pages about your time in Nepal….maybe dVerse or Poets United might do an interview, so you could tell us about it in more depth? I would love to hear all about it. The glimpses here are tantalizing. Maybe you will one day do a book about your trips over there. Imagine a child walking five miles to school. I imagine you have read Three Cups of Tea and Stones Into Schools. Little Princes by Conor Grennan is another wonderful one, about a young man caring for orphans in Nepal………
….Viv’s passing is so sad and reminds us our time is finite….but we do leave our poems behind, which is a good thing.
Grace said:
Sherry, thanks for dropping by and joining us for our celebration.
I will have to persuade Brian to give us more details or perhaps host a prompt for us, smiles.
brian miller said:
I have read 2 cups of tea…been a while though…will have to check out the other ones. Sherry, it was an amazing time…the people were wonderful…and even the poverty on some levels was beautiful if for no other reason than its humbling of my own spirit. We are so spoiled.
Ah the wildlife was amazing too. I had to walk the jungle road for several miles…and ford a river every day….I saw a monkey that I swear was as tall as I was…
Yeah, I love to talk about it, as you can tell…smiles…i have a couple speaking engagements lined up over the next month to talk about it…to try and recruit some help, you know…
I have this thought of putting together a christmas catelog for their needs and giving it out to get other involved…
Sherry Marr said:
A BRILLIANT idea…….do you find, as so many of us do, that though life is stripped down to sheer survival, the spirit of the people is more joyous and generous than what we see over here? A xmas list of needs is a wonderful idea…..or perhaps a cost list, it being easier to send money.
It is wonderful you have the opportunity to travel there and help. Your soul will grow rich with the experience.
brian miller said:
Oh most def. The people were amazing…and so much more open and accepting…and kind….willing to give you whatever they had to make you feel welcome…

Hi, Brian! Nice to meet you. Your story above was very eye-opening. I had no idea of the conditions in Nepal. Thank you for doing what you can.
brian miller said:
it is a 3rd world country..but i was surprised when i got there…i am not sure what i was expecting, but it def opened my eyes and touched my heart…the people though were amazing…and the kids at the school…ah, i love them…and my heart aches for them…
brian miller said:
Grace said:
I have seen that kind of poverty so I can appreciate all the blessings and little things that we take for granted – water, clean air, etc.
That would be a good project Brian. So kind of you to be thinking about their needs.

I will be stepping out and will be back tomorrow for any additional poems about “Journey”. Please check out another special feature tomorrow and another poetry prompt as well. Thanks for joining us !!!!

Happy 5th Anniversary dVerse…and what a surprise Grace! to see Brian chatting!! Really soooo miss you Brian! You are on a unique journey and have time constraints. Still it would be so lovely if you write once in a while & share with us we would be enriched.

Late to the party — out and about today. Happy 5th anniversary to all who are in the dVerse community!
Grace and Brian – what an amazing interview. Brian — your work is so very important. You are truly making a difference in the world — I so admire you! And, many thanks for being a founding member of this wonderful community.
I must say, I missed dVerse during the hiatus and am glad to see everyone again! I shall be doing my morning reading tomorrow — with steaming hot coffee in hand as usual. Looking forward to reading all the journeys folks have scripted here.
Happy Monday — although it’s now just 14 minutes into Tuesday in Boston! 🙂
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
I agree. The hiatus has been a few weeks of waiting, but it’s great to be here for the opening.
brian miller said:
hello lillian, i would like to think that i am doing a bit here or there, but it is just life and taking the chances that come to me mostly, you know. i am compelled and burdened, and not that i do it to seek relief from that but in response to

Would you look at the number of participants and comments on this occasion?!
Happy 5th anniversary, so pleased that it’s survived all of the toing and froing of the internet and change of personnel and that it’s thriving despite it all. Still the warmest, finest community of poets out there!
And how lovely to hear from Brian. Wow, you have been busy, haven’t you? Of course, it’s our loss that we don’t get to read your poetry, but it’s Nepal’s gain – and the young people you work with. You don’t make life easy for yourself, do you? But I loved what you said about: ‘Write out of the overflow of your life. And when it becomes a chore, walk away. It will be there when you return. And if it is not, it was not meant to be.’ Just the kind of words I need to hear at this crazy time!
I’ll HAVE to participate, and link up later today. But in the meantime, I look forward to reading your work, one and all. Off to fetch my cup of coffee and tucking in!
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
SO nice to have you here today… I hope all is well, and I so look forward to read you.
MarinaSofia said:
So nice to be here amongst old friends. As the Japanese poet says, it’s as comfortable and ‘familiar as a well-worn bathrobe’. Much love to you all and happy anniversary!
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
Yes so much that’s familiar, yet also something new.
brian miller said:
hmmm, i guess i should be wearing a bathrobe. ha.
hi marina. nah, its not the easy life i crave, but it is def interesting. its all fun, you know and i have never felt more alive. good to see you.
sorry to hear life is a little crazy right now, but if the words brought you a wee bit of comfort, i am glad.

Joyeux Anniversaire dVerse!

How nice to see the pub again after the summer break. I love to read about great adventures. Looking forward to more poetic journeys.
i am having a problem with linking, though. I think it might be because I am stealing time from my employer to do this on a very old computer…
brian miller said:
haha. perhaps it is. If you are still having a problem, leave your link in the comments and I am sure one of our pub tenders will get you linked in…
sometime i might just share a few of the actual adventures of my time over there, and not just an overview…

Good day Brian, glad to hear you are on your own journey, defined by your own definitions. There is no road less traveled, there is only the trail we each cut through our allotted time and I for one am proud of you for the path you are making. Stay the course bud, just stay your own course.
brian miller said:
we all have to find our way, dont we. its just not as fulfilling when we follow someone elses dream, never giving time to our own – or our own definitions. I like that. thanks a bunch and have a great day.

Grace, it was so nice to see the doors open with Brian visiting the pub on the 5th anniversary.
Brian, as I have always said you are an amazing human being full of compassion for life and the world. You have touched so many lives one thread at a time. Who knows how far reaching your touch has gone. I imagine it vibrating through the atmosphere. I call you friend and that you will “truly” always be to me.
I’ve missed you, the journey beckons onward as the heart finds it way through the
sun and clouds of life.
I will definitely be writing on “journey” as I am always on a journey in the quest for understanding.
much love to all!
Brian Miller said:
Hey tru.
We are all little drops on the surface of the pond. Bumping into each other’s echoes. ..and every once in a while riding the wake of each other’s ripples. How can we not come away changed?
I am happy to call you friend.
lillian said:
The journey continues — and here I am, coffee cup in hand, and yes, wearing my bathrobe still at 7:30 AM Boston time. Moseying over to do some wonderful anniversary reading! 🙂
Brian Miller said:
I could use some more coffee…did not have any on my trip…but I am just as addicted now that I am back…ha

Wonderful interview! I was wondering how you were Brian and hoping all is well with you. thank you for that! All the best to you and your family! And thank you for the advice on knowing when writing/posting and such become a burden and to just walk away and come back when ready, for it will always be there. I’ve done just that for the time being and it puts my mind at ease. This is a wonderful community and i’m happy to be a part of it! thank you!
Brian Miller said:
We can try to force it for a while but it will catch up with us and color our verse as well. I think anything we do, even the good things, can get out of balance and keep us from doing those great things we are called to do. Good on you for.knowing your time and yourself well enough to.pull away when needed. Travel light, hope.

What? My left hand would be my dirty hand? That just isn’t grand lol my ocd says run. Or bring toilet paper by the ton.
Very true, when it takes away from life and kids and the wife, time to take a break. I avoid that due to people thinking every day I partake. Being a year ahead has it’s perks and always keeps something in the works. Not that hermit me goes far. but at least I leave the door ajar.
Good the gawker is still gawking away though with plenty of new experiences in tow.
Brian Miller said:
Do new and tow rhyme or was that a slip in your chime
Whassup cat, you are still where it is at. And little food.left me skinny now fat. Butt yeah. No love for the left, as it swipes the cleft. Will stop by your raft in a bit, but will bring some Tp in case I need to…
Pat Hatt said:
Though and tow do at any zoo haha I’d ever be able to look at my left hand again, blah.
brian miller said:
sorry i am a bit rusty, and thanks to hand sanitizer the left hand is no longer crusty.

Happy 5th, Y’all! Thanks for the great prompt, Grace, and a tip o’ the hat to Brian for the inspiration line 🙂 After 2 years teaching Virtual, I return to the high school classroom ‘live’ to dwell among 150 seniors in English Lit. Can’t wait to get back! I feel a bit rusty in writing – I (mostly) took two weeks off from the poetry gig. Great to see everyone here, Jilly
Brian Miller said:
Very cool. Have fun being back in the classroom. Def makes me feel alive to be hanging out with students again.
jillys2016 said:
Thanks, Brian. Marvelous pics from Nepal. I spent several of my teaching years working with refugees from Burma ; more of a learner than a teacher. The classroom is my current ministry, as it is yours! Glad you have joined us for the celebration. 🙂
Brian Miller said:
That is exactly how I view my classroom…it is my missions field

Such a shame to hear about Viv. Maybe someday, I’ll find the time to come back, but right now the journey is more than taking all my time. I do miss this community though.
