This morning, I spent some time reflecting on how important it is to be open to whatever comes our way. We have our goals, our bucket lists—hopefully. But life doesn’t always cooperate, loves to tease us with a curve ball now and again. From that little reflection, the word OPEN has been playing in my mind and so I’m choosing it for this week’s Quadrille.
There are so many ways of considering these four little letters. Just check out a few of the ways we can use it:
• Adjective: accessible, available, ajar, candid, exposed, frank, forthright, unlocked.
• Noun: openings, openness, the open (outdoors), opener.
• Verb: open the mind, the door, the heart, the mouth.
• Adverb: openly.
So, my poet friends, let us open our notebooks, computers and creative spirits to bring forth a Quadrille of exactly 44 words—no more, no less—to share here at dVerse.
Here’s how:
• Post your Quadrille on your blog or website.
• Add a Link to dVerse and share with your social networks.
• Copy and paste its URL into Mr. Linky at the bottom of this post, along with your name.
• Take some time to visit and comment on the work of your fellow poets.
• Have fun.
• Don’t forget that the link is open most of the week, so try to visit others who have joined in late.
This is Victoria, your hostess, looking forward to seeing what you have to share. I will OPEN the pub on Monday, at 3:00 PM EDT.

Welcome to the pub and our Quadrille post using the word OPEN…speaking of which, I’ll be opening some fine wine, and looking forward to reading your poetry. Don’t forget, you have all week to meet this challenge. I have an appointment in an hour but will come straight home to savor whatever you bring to for our reading pleasure. Enjoy! Cheers.

Wine is open, pub is open, word is open… I wonder if the the skies will open too.
Victoria C. Slotto said:
We only have a 15% chance of precip this week–are we in for another year of drought.
Brian said:
The skies are indeed open here today. Rain and thunder.
Victoria C. Slotto said:
Send some this way, Brian!
kanzensakura said:
Hi Victoria! Thank you for hosting and thank you for this incredible word for the Quadrille today. I love reading these short jewels of poetry so very much!
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
They are so much fun, I agree
kanzensakura said:
Yes. they are fun and profound and happy and serious….in only 44 words!
Victoria C. Slotto said:
So do I. They force a certain discipline and beauty.

Quadrille Monday is my absolute favorite, and I love this word, Victoria. 🙂
Victoria C. Slotto said:
My favorite, too.

Me too! 🙂

Hello, Victoria, and what a lovely prompt you have for us here! I’m feeling rather the opposite of open at the moment (all closed off), but I do look forward to reading these little gems of inspiration. I love the quadrille form!
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
Hello Marina, how nice to see you back visiting… Maybe inspiration will strike when reading…
MarinaSofia said:
I hope so!
kanzensakura said:
It is so good of you to visit us! You have been greatly missed. I do hope the move is getting better and that…opening…all those boxes haven’t tired you too greatly.
MarinaSofia said:
Would you believe it: in addition to all my computer and other woes, I also got a flat tyre at the weekend when I was rushing on my way to somewhere (and I had no spare and all the garages were closed). There’s a Romanian saying: ‘Even the oxen give up on the poor man’s cart.’ That’s how I feel at the mo’!
kanzensakura said:
Oh my goodness! Sorry about that tire. I’ll bet you’ll have a spare in your trunk from now on! I wouldn’t travel without one, even to the grocery. But then I’m a silly about stuff.
MarinaSofia said:
No, this car wasn’t sold to me with a spare tyre, unfortunately, just with an emergency puncture kit. Still, it was ‘fun’ using that in the rain on the main street in town…
kanzensakura said:
I’ll bet!
Victoria C. Slotto said:
So good to see you, Marina. I understand those moments so well.
Brian said:
Thank you Victoria for the challenging word today. I wanted to clarify that poetry of an erotic nature is okay at the pub.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
For me it’s perfect… we have actually thought about having it as a prompt…
Victoria C. Slotto said:
I’ll look forward to reading, Brian. We are quite OPEN here, from my perspective, as long as it isn’t hurting someone else.
Brian said:
Thanks Victoria for answering.
Victoria C. Slotto said:
You are welcome. And your poem is both tasteful and sensual.
sarahsouthwest said:
Hello there, Victoria! Open up a bottle of something red and pour me out a glass. Interesting prompt – I’m anticipating a huge range of pieces. Thank you!
Victoria C. Slotto said:
My husband collects some lovely wine–how about a nice full-bodied Zinfandel?

great word! It’s open to so many possibilites 🙂

And word-play! Welcome Bryan.

So glad you are here!
Linda Kruschke said:
Quadrille Monday has become my favorite dVerse prompt. I may not have time to write or read haibuns (though I do love those, too), and often the Poetics prompt doesn’t speak to me or I don’t have time. But who doesn’t have time for 44 words? It’s so much fun to take a single word and see where it takes you. And to see where it takes others, often in completely different directions, though sometimes a common thread will emerge. Thanks for hosting, Victoria. Great choice of words today.
kanzensakura said:
One reason I have shortened the prompt of haibun to one paragraph. It is much easier and also more in tune to the originals. I appreciate your taking part in it. The meeting the bar – forms for all don’t often wow me either. Some are just too…fussy.
Linda Kruschke said:
I wish I had time to do every prompt, but I just don’t have time to read that many poems and I don’t like to “post and run.” I seldom get to them all, but if I know I won’t have time to read any I skip it.
Victoria C. Slotto said:
I appreciate that you do take time to comment. I agree that I don’t join in if I can’t really give attention to the poetry others have written.
kanzensakura said:
Sounds very wise. I do the same thing.
Victoria C. Slotto said:
I agree, Linda. 44 words is so enticing, even when you’re not “in the mood,” and serves as a good jump-start.

Hey everyone,
Hope you guys are having an amazing day so far ❤ sharing my poem 'Soliloquy' thank you Victoria for giving us such a lovely prompt 😀 this one's for you ❤
Lots of love,

sarahsouthwest said:
Sanaa – I’m having problems commenting on your page, but I loved the poem. The last line is so very beautiful – I wish I’d written it…!
Victoria C. Slotto said:
Can’t wait to read it, Sanaa. Thank you.
Bodhirose said:
Hello Victoria and all participants! This is a great word that can have so many meanings. I did add ‘ed’ on the end of my word and hope that that was admissible. Glad your internet connection is cooperating today, Victoria. 🙂
Victoria C. Slotto said:
Any form of the word is acceptable. Play with it! Glad to see you, Gayle.
Bodhirose said:
So glad to see you too, Victoria! Thanks for a great word for the quadrille. xo
Mish said:
Wonderful to see you hosting today, Victoria. 🙂 I am open to some fine wine and some fine quadrilles. Love the word “open”!
Victoria C. Slotto said:
I’m happy to be hosting, too. Sorry to be late because of an appointment but one of the nice things about this prompt is that it is open longer.
kim881 said:
Hi everyone and thanks to Victoria for an interesting prompt! I’ve just got back from opening my mouth and singing with the Invidia Rock and Soul Choir, so I’ve only dropped by to check out the prompt and let it permeate my brain until tomorrow morning, when I will post a Quadrille and enjoy reading everyone else’s. I’ll say goodnight for now and be back in the morning for a cup of tea. 🍵
Victoria C. Slotto said:
So, Kim, have you ever thought of adding a vocal to your poetry!? Sleep well and I will see you tomorrow.

Bryan and Mish…just wanted to let you know I am having trouble clicking over to visit you guys. Seems to be a wordpress issue…which is weird, because I can click to my own link, and I am wordpress as well. I’ll be over to read as soon as I can figure out what’s going on…
whimsygizmo said:
And now, for no reason whatsoever, it’s all back to good. 😉
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
I think this happens sometimes… when it happens to me it’s usually those that have paid for a domain that are difficult to reach… which doesn’t seem to be the cause of the glitch.
ihatepoetry said:
Feel free to take mine down as it doesn’t contain the word “open” but it does open itself on a secret I learned the hard way. Forgive me, for not understanding the directions clearly. – cheers, Mosk
Victoria C. Slotto said:
Do you think you could tweak it and throw in the word open, Mosk.
little learner said:
Such diverse responses to the prompt! Each offering a gem. Thank you, Victoria. So simple, and yet so profound.
Victoria C. Slotto said:
I’m just now diving in and can’t wait to see what everyone has brought to the bar.
Victoria C. Slotto said:
I’ve run across a few poems that don’t have the word OPEN in it. To clarify, the quadrille prompt is not for a theme so much as to use a form of the word offered in exactly 44 words.
othermary said:
What a wonderful prompt, Victoria!
Victoria C. Slotto said:
Glad you enjoyed it, Mary.
othermary said:
Very much! And I’m back writing after a long, quiet spell. You You and the dVerse community make starting again much easier than on my own. Thanks you!

Love the prompt word Victoria! Always a pleasure to read the poems.
I thought of a prompt suggestion: labyrinth. Labyrinths are so spiritual and mystical and grounding all at the same time.
Victoria C. Slotto said:
I wrote a poem titled labyrinth quite a while ago. We have a lovely one at a huge regional park here in Reno.
mother wintermoon said:
I love labyrinths! There some really beautiful ones around the country. It would be fun to do a labyrinth tour.

It’s another bright morning and I have a quadrille to post. Not sure if I’m happy with it but I’ll post it and see what happens. That’s the beauty of the Quadrille: you never know where it will take you and you can always write another one.
Victoria C. Slotto said:
They often do surprise us.

Victoria C. Slotto said:
Yeah–off to read now.
Rosemary Nissen-Wade said:
Lovely that the prompt is open a whole week. I have just come back from a little holiday away – which experience gave me my quadrille, and there was still time to include it. 🙂 Now it is after midnight, so I’ll be reading other people’s tomorrow.
Victoria C. Slotto said:
So glad you made it, Rosemary. I’m off to read now.
