Hello my fellow poets! Welcome to my final Haibun Monday posting of the year – both old and new faces are welcome here at the Pub to sit by the fire or at the bar or among the many tables scattered about.
I was reading the Night Before Christmas and was struck by the last line of the story poem: And to all a goodnight! I liked that ending as much as I liked Scrooge’s conversion in his story, A Christmas Carol.
So in keeping with the season or not, let us write a haibun about a good night. It can be a good night’s sleep, a fun time with family and/or friends, a night spent alone, a memorable Christmas night you tried to stay awake and wait to see Santa, a night out camping in the wilds, out sledding in the moonlight, your first date…any good night you wish to write about as long as 1)It is non-fiction 2) It happened directly to you 3) One to two tight paragraphs 4) You end it with a classical seasonal haiku.
I am keeping this posting short and simple.
If you are new to the pub, welcome! Here’s how to join in:
• Write you poem and post it on your blog or website.
• Copy and paste the URL into Mr. Linky at the bottom of this post.
• Link your poem to your social media sites, inviting others to join in.
• Return to the pub and visit/comment on your fellow poets.
• Have a good time!
Toni Spencer (hayesspencer, Kanzensakura) wishing you all the joys of this season. God Bless us every one!
Greetings, fellow poets. Thank you, Toni, for a fun prompt. Thinking back, so many good nights and not a few that were not so good. It will be fun to see what we all come up with. In case Toni isn’t able to be here much, please keep her in your good thoughts. Her mom, for whom she cares, is needing her right now.
Thank you Victoria for covering for me. I loved this poem and so decided it would work well for the last haibun of the year.
Hello everyone. welcome to our last haibun event for the year. I apologize in advance if it taKes me some time to get back with you all regarding comments and such. My mother is living with me now. I am having hospice come in tomorrow to assess the situation. so times are rough right now with me. But I will be in and out and to read and comment.
Hi Toni! We understand and appreciate your time. Take care of your mom and family. Hope you are coping well.
I am coping as well as a depressed 65 year old can cope. But Thank you much. I will survive, though how, I am not yet sure.
Hi Toni! Thank you for hosting!
Though I remember the good nights, I always think about the others, those in the not so fortunate situation. Still a lot of blessings and good nights to cherish and remember.
I have a huge container of spiced cider for you all – to help ward off the cold. For those of you desiring something stronger, I also have some mulled wine. Drink up and enjoy.
Hi Toni and Victoria! First, thank you for this wonderful prompt. And Toni, my thoughts and prayers are with you right now. Take strength in that people love you and care for your situation. Bless your mother and this task you take on your shoulders. Thank you, Toni for everything and also for introducing me to haibun!
Thank you Jane for your kind words and prayers. I loved this prompt, actually and felt some good nights would be in order.
I went back to much simpler times for my haibun this go around. Being out in the desert with a friend to watch meteor showers is always a good night to remember.
Hmmmm…good nights that I can remember…now that is a challenge 😉
🙂 I only went blotto one time in my life…after that one time I said, no more. I was probably one of the few who didn’t do it again and again. But, as you will see in my haibun, I had other “resources” at my fingertips.
Fortunately I have also had many a goodnight I CAN remember…great prompt…almost ready to post.
Hurray for good memories!
Thank you, Toni. I’ll go with the cider for now. It’s still early here.
I always go with the cider, regardless of the time of day. I loves me some spiced cider.
Hello Friends.. I just came back from a short business trip to Helsinki… I will try to write something… before I say goodnight, the alarm was set to 4.50 this morning, so I really need a good night.
And that sounds like the beginning of an excellent haibun! Take your time Bjorn. I know you are busy.
Hello dear Toni and all.
Such a wonderful theme for our last haibun of the year. No snow here in Boston – it’s been many a year since we had a white Christmas here so this got me thinking about the blizzards of Iowa and hence my post.
Toni – prayers go with you as you help your mother through her final journey. Be sure to take care of yourself too – and know there are many who think you are quite special in many ways – take solace in that.
Thank you Lillian. It means a great deal.
Hi Toni..thanks for all you do here in the midst of your own difficult times. Sending positive thoughts and prayers to you and your mom. I hope to write a haibun tonight, but wanted to at least stop by to say hello. We have a lot of snow …beautiful to look at decorating the trees and roofs, but it wasn’t a pretty sight when I got stuck on a side street today that wasn’t plowed yet.
Thank you MIsh. I’ll bet getting stuck in the snow wasn’t any fun! I remember when I lived in Philadelphia and had to do much driving about in the city. I always dreaded those side streets, alleys and cobblestones. So I totally sympathize.
Yes, I have to admit I had a bit of a meltdown, crying in my car because nothing was working. These lighter cars they make today just don’t get the same traction. I miss my 19 yr. Camry.
I’ll bet you do. I love my 15 year old ccorolla.
A joyful time of renewal. Merry Christmas everyone. 🙂
And Merry Christmas to you as well!
Hello all. I am going to leave for a few hours. I will be back later to read and make comments. Help yourselves to the hot mulled cider and wine.
Hello Toni and dVerse poets! Thank you for this interesting prompt that will pull out the good thoughts of a special night we’ve all had, Toni. My thoughts are with you also as you continue to care for your elderly and ailing mother. I hope hospice will have some support to offer you after your meeting tomorrow. May abundant blessings flow your way. Hugs…
Thank you Gayle. Hugs.
I was writing a comment when the power blipped and the internet went out. Long story short, I have not been writing much poetry lately. My wife Diane had a major setback 10 days ago with her health. Her left ankle, the one she had surgery on a year ago suddenly developed an internal infection and she can no longer walk. It has also wreaked havoc on her diabetes and dialysis so I am full on 24/7 care at the moment. We are trying to avoid the hospital because it makes her even sicker – ironic I know – but another surgery may have to happen. I wanted to say that I miss reading and contributing to the prompts but I can’t summon the effort right now. Thanks everyone and I’ll likely link something for OLN at least.
Sorry to hear of your troubles Brian. Thinking of you. Go well…as well as you can.
I hope things settle down, Brian.
Oh, Brian, so sorry you and your wife are having to go through this. I strongly agree that it is wise to avoid the hospital, unless absolutely needed. I had dialysis before my transplant and that is so hard for both of you, I know. Thoughts and prayers. My prayer list is getting longer!
Sorry to hear of your troubles. I certainly know whart it is to do 24/7 care. My best wishes to you and your wife. Don’t worry too much about writing. dVerse is about to gone on break for a couple of weeks. Take care of yourself and your dear wife.
Hi everyone! I just got in from the last choir practice of the year and am pleased that I could make it to the last Tuesday Haibun of the year. Thank you, Toni, for a great prompt. I hope that you are getting all the support you need from friends and family, as well as the hospice. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
Thank you Kim. You certainly know how it is!
Toni – thank you for a lovely prompt. I had lots of great memories to choose from, so nice to reflect on them. I chose a really special night for many reasons. I hope things work out OK, and that you are getting the support you need. My heart goes out to you.
Thank on both fronts. I am trying. It is hard to qualify for hospice here in the states but I am starting the process.
So sorry to hear about your worries with your mother, Toni. Thinking of you both really hard right now and feel bad that I’ve been so self-absorbed and absent, wrapped up in my own petty little problems. Nothing compares to life and death.
Ahhh, but it is your life and problems and there is nothing petty about it.
Best wishes, Toni, for you and your mother. Thank you for posting the prompt.
Thank you Frank. I felt ending the year on an up note would be a good thing for us all.
My favorite prompt! I am off to collect kids from school and do the after school activities – will be back later tonight to visit and comment.
Thanks, Toni! This was right up my lane! I couldn’t resist tossing this into the mix. Walt
Finally back to a bit of normality after a lot of travel… will hit the trail and see what has came up after last night.
