Hey everyone! This is Mish from mishunderstood.wordpress.com bringing you today’s Poetics.
On one of my recent drives home from work, winding along a beautiful river road, I was thinking about the various signs that greet me along the way. With limited words or simple symbols, they advise me, guide me or warn me of the next curve in the road. They are short and sweet, much like titles to a story, or perhaps…..a poem?
Today I’d like you to choose a sign as a visual prompt. Let it speak to you metaphorically or as an allegory. Let it take you to a deeper place or even a comical place. Your sign does not need to have words, as symbols have stories and voices too. The choice is yours.
Here are a few for you to ponder and some websites that will offer you free images of signs:
If you are new to the pub, here’s how to join in:
- Write a poem on your blog or website in response to the prompt.
- Add the direct URL address to your poem via Mr. Linky.
- Link back to dVerse from your site.
- Read and comment on other poets’ work.
- Have fun!
Hello everyone! Welcome to our Poetics!!!!
Serendipity — just the other day I found an image of the perfect sign for this prompt…
I can relate to your sign Bjorn ~ Happy Tuesday ~
What fun, Mish. Signs are one of my categories for photography–a terrific idea for a prompt–a sign of the times–hand signs–glyphs–portents–the possibilities are endless
Yes, possibilities are endless with signs ~ Bring it on ~
Maybe we could have used your photo group on facebook for the prompt 🙂 many signs there.
Thanks for the prompt, Mish! I posted one about home using a set of street corner signs near where I live.
Good idea, I could have used it too… as a matter of fact the street name I live in contains my name 🙂
That sounds great, Frank. Will be by soon to read. 🙂
Love this prompt, Mish! I had a bit of fun with it. But after I posted I thought of the old Burma Shave signs along the old highways in the US. Used to be really fun to read and follow them. I may google them and put up a second post!
Oh my goodness, Lillian. I had to google that myself because I had never heard of them or the product. I found this on Wikipedia…
“The word “burmashaving” is used in Canada to describe politicians holding signs and waving to traffic by the side of the road, a common sight during election campaigns.[10][11] One of the first to use the phrase was Nova Scotia Progressive Conservative premier John Buchanan, who would stand at the end of a long line of party signs and wave to morning traffic”
Where have I been? haha
I still see one on old Highway 395 between Carson City and Reno. Tickles me every time.
🙂
I can’t even begin to describe how much I enjoyed writing for this prompt!❤️ Sharing my poem Untitled (maybe it was a sign) Happy Tuesday everyone 😀
I’m so glad you liked it, Sanaa. Looking forward to your poem. 🙂
A quick post today…your prompt reminded me of a humorous sign I saw years ago. Thanks for hosting, Mish!
Thanks for joining in, Lynn. 🙂
Hey all you long-haired freaky people. The words of the prophet are written on the subway walls. Sign o the times, mess with your mind…
Sent from my iPad
Signs, signs everywhere the signs! Nice to see you, erbiage. 🙂
Love that song…and I went back to hippie times.
Reblogged this on All About Writing and more.
Thank you for the reblog, Henrietta. We are happy to welcome new visitors to our cozy pub of poetry. 🙂
You are welcome!
Hello poetic friends! Hope you enjoy the prompt. Thank you Grace and Bjorn for tending bar for me. 🙂
Definitely fun. And the newspaper gave me an idea. I knew there was some reason for scanning that thing.
Yes! It’s wonderful when that happens. It was a sign. 😉
I don’t know… I think this one caught me in a serious mood. Perhaps some sangria to lighten my spirits.
Coming right up, Charley…..a red, with fresh berries. Not that I don’t enjoy the way a serious mood pours into a poem. It’s all good!
Yeah, but the berries help. As long as you’re not giving me the raspberries! 🙂
Nope, it’s strawberry season where I come from. Enjoy!
Ahhh, fresh berries! Brings out the bear in me. …Yogi mostly.
Yeesh! Is there a way to remove a wrong InLink? If so, I haven’t discovered it…hence I appear twice. Mea culpa!
I can take care of that, Bev. Thanks. 🙂
Enjoyed this prompt Mish. Thank you. I ended up writing a quadrille inspired by “Dead End”.
Fantastic! I’ll be out on the trail soon. Looking forward to it. 🙂
Not terribly poetic tonight but hey! I wrote something. Cheers!
Cheers Nosaint! Thanks for joining us.
Fun and interesting prompt. I have been away a long time. Perhaps I will write again. I have missed you all, those whom I knew . . . and look forward to getting to know those That I don’t know. Tomorrow I look forward to visiting you all.
