Lillian here and it’s OLN time again at dVerse! That means you can post one poem of your choosing – no prompt, no form required etc. So have at it folks!
And on a personal note – our American Thanksgiving is approaching. I’ve always enjoyed this holiday as it is one without gift-giving.
For us, it is a time for the Hallberg family to gather in Chicago and share a festive meal. Before the meal itself, there are many hugs and much talk and laughter. There is also the nostalgic realization that we now are the elders. Our elders are those no longer with us – the wonderful parents, aunts and uncles, and grandparents who started this gathering tradition. We say our table grace as we stand holding hands in a large circle that reaches round the entire el-shaped living/dining room and sometimes into the kitchen too. We give thanks for the food we are about to enjoy and for family – and perhaps that is the greatest gift of all.
And for those of you new to dVerse, here’s what we hope everyone does:
- Write ONE poem of your choosing and post to your blog.
- Click on Mr. Linky below and add your name and enter the direct URL to your poem
- On your blog, please provide a link back to dVerse. This enables others to enjoy our prompts, multiplies our readers and thus the responses to all of our poems.
- If you promote your poem on social media, use the tag #dverse poets
- And most importantly, please do read some of the other responses to the prompt and add a short comment or reaction. Everyone likes to be appreciated! The prompt is “live” for several days – as you’ll notice by the comments you’ll receive – so do stop by another day and read a few of the latecomers too!
Hello to all and welcome to OLN! Happy to be with you this sunny but chilly Boston afternoon. Looking forward to reading your posts!
Hi Lilian! It is brutally cold down South. But all is well and I am truly thankful to be alive and sharing poetry on this page. Your poem is a true stunner.
Ah Toni….always wonderful to see you here…..and I always think I’ve hit a home run so to speak, if I get a comment from you like this. MANY MANY thanks!
Go Sox!!!!
🙂
Good evening all. Thank you for hosting, Lill,. I had my flu jab last week, but I’m afraid it hasn’t worked as I have a dose of the flu and can’t stop sneezing and sniffing, It’s early to bed for me tonight, but I’ll be back to read and comment in the morning, and I know there will be plenty to engage me and some poems to cheer me up; I’d like to get better by next Thursday, when I’m travelling down to my daughter’s for her birthday. I’ll be staying over until Monday, so I won’t be posting during that time.
oh dear…..my guess is you had a sore arm for a bit from the flu shot and then add insult to injury with getting sick anyway! Ugh. Feel better soon and for sure, before you travel!
Thank you so much, Lill. I went to bed early and managed, somehow, to sleep right through to six o’clock. I have to go out today, but I’m going to take it easy.
One reason I never take a flu shot – they never work because they are always for a season or two past. Go to bed, drink plenty of liquids, and get well because I know you want to cuddle Lucas.
Thank you kindly, Toni. I had an early night and, for once, slept through. It’s twenty to seven in the morning, I have a cup of cranberry and raspberry tea, and am about to read and comment on poems. I have to go out today, but it’s not raining this morning – I will wrap up warm though. And you’re so right – I can’t wait to get my Lucas cuddles!
Hello… I will make my rounds before bedtime and be back later, tomorrow and through the weekend… I hope I’m through the flu for this time.
Flue be gone!!!!
Hello Lillian and All. Traditions are important and yours has longevity it sounds like. Was just on the road and thinking about things like memories and tradition and will be linking to the poem once it’s written. Happy Mid-Autumn to Everyone.
p.s. The snow plows are out and the roads are white even after. I fear this will be a strong winter. There’s a very small possum hanging around under the the evergreen shrubs. He eats the shells of the sunflower seeds, and oh my are his little hands red.
A snow plow????? Seems so early for that. We had just a bit of snow fall yesterday in Boston, but the kind that does not stick. We leave for San Diego, CA on Jan 8 and will not return to Boston until March 11. Hoping we escape most of the heavy white stuff! It is beautiful but the older I get, the more I would rather only see photos of it or see it falling outside my window!
Yes, amazing they are already plowing. San Diego for 2 months sounds peachy. I know what you mean about getting less tolerant of it.
Hello Lillian and all- Thanks for hosting Lillian and sharing your traditions. I am taking care of a sick husband who is down with a bad back- UGH. But will try to post something!
Ooooh, so sorry, Linda. Tell your hubby that we at dVerse wish him well! 🙂
I will, thank you. He’s napping right now, so I just shared a poem.
Been away from the pub for quite some time…. Sure I will see some familiar faces.
Glad to have you back, Mark! The more the merrier at the pub! 🙂
wonderful sentiments Lillian and you really got me thinking. our elders are always with us, even after we have joined those ranks. (which often happens before we are aware of it) and the holiday without gift-giving, yes! this! in some ways, it’s the only holiday that has true gifts given!
my link is to a variation i wrote on the previous prompt if it’s darkness we are having…
It really is a special holiday in my mind. Glad you enjoyed my little diatribe here 🙂 Just getting to your post for reading now. Glad to see you here!
hmmmmm well maybe it’s just me, but I couldn’t find any way to comment on your poem on your site? I liked it very very much and found the way the title oozed into the poem itself….just like that velvet darkness…..quite effective.
Is this posting? It keeps telling me my comment cannot be posted. Wondering if my links are showing up in the linkys as well, now, because I have gotten zero interaction last 2 prompts.
I can see this. I’ll go in and look to see if I can see your poem.
OK, looks like that one worked. I also love Thanksgiving, so thank you (if I may) for a lovely essay on the topic!
You’re welcome! It is truly my favorite holiday! 😉
Hi Lillian enjoy your family gathering and feast … it’s not a big celebration here in oz but I have enjoyed some nice meals overseas with US expats celebrating 🙂
For us, it truly is a renewing time. We only see some of our family for that one day each year so it is very special. I’m just so glad we have the ability to travel to be with everyone. 😉
yes the freedom and health to gather is most important 🙂
Lily: I noticed you posted a poem here….Magic Lily. But there is no way for me to comment….and you have not Tagged dVerse or linked to dVerse which is a requirement to post here. I’m therefore deleting your post….BUT hope to see you repost, with a Tag to dVerse so others might fund us as well. This will also add to your readership.
Thank you Lillian for hosting today. I have relinked to my poem from yesterday because it relates to my being adopted — certainly in my very short list of things for which I am most thankfu in my life.
…the full measure of my thankfulness came later as I bcame a parent.
As I often say . . . thankful for every day. Good to see you here, Rob. I always enjoy your posts.
Lillian,
Thankfulness is one of my favorite themes and perfect for November. How wonderful that you will be able to celebrate with family. Sometimes I wonder what it will be like to be the elder. I haven’t entered that zone yet. I am looking forward to cups of mulled wine, tea and hot cider as the weather chills. And reading poems in front of the fireplace.
Mulled cider sounds delicious….I fear winter is coming much to early this year!
Yes — it it both sobering and nostalgic when my husband and I look around the room at Thanksgiving, and realize we are the elders now. Aunt Bertha, Uncle Bud, Uncle Wes, Papa Milt, Hjalmer, Aunt Patsy, etc are all gone….and we are now in their chairs. We wonder if when we are gone, the younger ones will carry on the tradition? I hope so. 🙂
Hi Lillian, Thanks for hosting.
Hello everyone. I haven’t been here for a while. I am liking the talk of traditions. It is the season for them:) I’m off to do some reading.
Pat
Hi Lillian, Thanks for hosting.

Pat
So nice to see you here Pat. Glad you liked my post about traditions….Thanksgiving truly is my favorite holiday!
Have a good one:)
I hope they do. Family is such a treasure.
Hello again, Ali. While I am delighted with your post to this prompt, it does not have a Tag or link to dVerse (https://dversepoets.com). That is a requirement to post her. I’m sure you just inadvertently forgot or I’m just not seeing it. Would you please add a Tag or link so others might also find our site? Many thanks.
Lillian, I tagged it dVerse Poets Pub. Is that the wrong tag? But I did forget to add a link back to the pub under my poem. I just went in and added that. So sorry. Let me know if I made any other errors. I like to play by the rules.
No problem, Ali. I did not see the Tag but thanks for adding the link! And, glad to have you here!
Hello all! Stepping out for dinner…..will stop in one more time tonight a bit later and then, of course, put coffee on the bar in the morning. In the meantime, the key is under the mat just outside the pub door. Help yourself to libations on the bar and do leave your posts behind! I surely enjoy reading them all!
Lillian
You paint such lovely and happy picture of Thanksgiving with a wonderful family Lillian. Hope this year is happy and memorable for all of you. ☺️
Thank you, Christine. It really is my favorite holiday!
To the 6 of you who still follow my BLACKTHORNE, I’m sorry I did not write an episode …had a 3 hour dental procedure today. Don’t worry, I will continue writing on it as long as some you still clamor for it.
YES….more more more! Oooh that long in a dental chair does not sound good. So sorry.
Hi, Lillian and the dVerse community. Sharing my prayers for a bountiful and peaceful Thanksgiving.
May healing blanket the hearts wounded by shooting incidents in America, the latest one a few hours ago. ❤
Sending so much prayers from Asia to US. ❤
Thank you, sincerely. I am afraid these school shootings have become so frequent that reading about them, seeing them on the news, does not strike home for far too many. Gun violence is so horrific. I do not understand why we can’t pass sensible gun laws and people can see that the 2nd amendment was written in colonial times and never ever did they think there would be automatic rifles, magazines that hold hundreds of shots, etc. Ok. I’ll stop venting. But again, thank you so very much for your thoughts here.
Oh dear, I cannot find the words. I mean I am so far but the stories are reaching me and it is really troubling. I hope some changes will happen. I mean. This should not be the new normal. 😦 Praying for peace and healing to you and your country. ❤
Hi Lillian, thank you for hosting, and happy Thanksgiving! I’m finding November hard – so dark! so much rain! so much mud! – but I guess I’m thankful for the odd times the sun breaks through, and for the last of the apples.
Hi Sarah….good to see you here. Oh yes….our time change is hard to adjust to and we’ve had plenty of dark and dreary weather too. BUT today dawned bright and sunny — cold — but still, the sunshine is welcome!
A belated happy OLN everyone and thank you for hosting this lovely session Lillian! Your family gathering sounds like a wonderful tradition and it’s so nice for the younger generation that you are passing this warm gathering on as the new elders. I’m linking a tanka from earlier this week and will swing by tonight and tomorrow to read xxx
Had our granddaughter with us all weekend so finally getting back to the pub. Cold and dreary in Boston today so happy to take refuge in the pub. 😊. Nice to see your note this month ruing!

Yikes Lillian. The piece you deleted is not at all what I meant to post. I would never post a blurb for my blog in place of a poem. Let me have a look at what I meant to post…Thanks for bringing this to my attention..Judy
No problem! I am just getting back to the pub as we had our granddaughter with us over the weekend. It’s a cold and dreary day so it’s nice to come into the pub. No problem – I figured it was a mistake so glad you posted again.
I have to apologize. If my entry goes through, it is the wrong poem! I thought I was contributing to a different Open Link prompt….maybe… sigh!
Hi, Lillian–a belated thanks for hosting. I love Thanksgiving, too. I haven’t been around much, and I missed all the prompts this week, but I saw this was still open, so I linked a poem. 🙂 I’ll be back later to read. Lots going on this weekend.

Very late to the party but thankful to have arrived at all. Thanks for the prompt, Lilian.
Glad to see you here Susanne. I’m just getting back to the pub to finish out OLN today as we had our granddaughter with us this weekend. Cold and dreary here in Boston so very happy to imbibe some poetry this morning!
