Lillian here. Greeting you from sunny San Diego and happy to host Thursday’s OLN at dVerse, the virtual pub for poets.
We’re escaping Boston’s winter and have been here since January 8th. Will return home in mid-March. It’s been a joy to experience the sunshine and temperatures in the 60s – cold to native San Diegans, but beautiful to us! Thought I would simply share some photos with you….so you can be an armchair traveler today. The ocean photo is from the window of the Coaster train which we took from San Diego, up the northern coast to Oceanside – got off and walked the pier – then hopped back on to Encinitas. We walked 1.5 miles from the Encinitas station to get to the beautiful Botanical Gardens and were not disappointed! Last photo is from yesterday’s fun outing to the Automobile Museum in San Diego’s Balboa Park.
Okay writers! Most of you know the story for OLN:
Post any ONE poem of your choice.
No particular prompt/form/rhyme scheme required. BUT
PLEASE tag dVerse or link to us (see below for specific instructions)
NEW TO dVERSE? Need to be refreshed on the rules? HERE’S WHAT TO DO:
- Write a poem of your choosing.
- Post the poem to your blog AND add the exact URL for your poem to Mr. Linky below.
- REMEMBER to either TAG dVerse in your post, or include a link at the end of your poem that leads the reader back to https://dversepoets.com
- If there is no Tag or link back to dVerse, I will gently remind you to add it or remove your post from Mr. Linky. Sorry to be so harsh – but this is just part of the requirements AND it will bring you more readers and lead more folks to dVerse so they can participate as well.
Looking forward to reading your posts today!

Good evening, Lill! You look like you’re having a great time in San Diego. I’m currently having problems with Microsoft Word, which is telling me it’s updating Office and then comes up with an error message. I haven’t started to tear my hair out yet, but t’s a pain! Poetry will soothe me, so I’m looking forward to some great reads tonight.

Happy OLN everybody and thank you for hosting tonight Lillian! It looks wonderfully warm and sunny in San Diego and very soothing for the soul! I’ve linked a tanka from earlier today and will swing by in a moment to read xxx
lillian said:
Glad to see you here today! I’ve always loved tanka. When I first learned the form, my teacher said to me “A tanka is . . . well it’s for when three lines just won’t do!” As in, more than a haiku 😉 That thought always comes back to me and makes me smile.

It’s a lovely town and though I usually do not like zoos, their wild animal park does a wonderful job of giving animals their freedom.
lillian said:
I agree. I’ve done some reading about zoos….the San Diego and National Zoo in Washington DC are both accredited (stringent policies toward animals’ safety, habitats, care, extremely limited human interference etc) — and both work for the betterment of the animals and breed to avoid extinction.
