A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to go to Baltimore and watch U2 perform as part of their 360 tour. About five songs in, the stage went quiet, all the lights went still, even the crowd caught their breath, when Bono let out…”Future needs a big kiss”…and after a brief pause they lit into the song Get on Your Boots.
Just a few months earlier, I was in New York City, touring the Metropolitan Museum of Art. When we entered the hall leading into that Modern Art exhibit, we were great by a face sculpted out of shoes, entitled Shine by Willie Cole.
U2’s song is not about shoes, but it is.
Willie Cole’s sculpture is not about shoes, but it is.
This is the essence of art, including poetry, taking something ordinary and showing people a new way of looking at it. It is also what we hope happens here at Poetics.
Each week we will provide an inspiration, whether a piece of art, music, photograph, topic, movie clip, news article. Really the possibilities are endless. Your job is to interpret it poetically.
Just starting this journey together, we are going to need a good pair of shoes, so let’s let that be our inspiration today.
~Write a poem, with shoes as your inspiration.
~Post it on you blog.
~Click the Mr. Linky button below, and in the new window that opens input your name and direct URL of the poem.
~Then go visit others that have taken the challenge, as we are all about community here.
Have a great weekend everyone! ~Brian
Welcome to Poetics everyone. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. And hope everyone is staying cool…it is 101 here today…
Ever listen to the House of Pain? They have a song about shoes…kind of 🙂 Might use this little dash of inspiration, coupled with an awesome U2 tune, and a fantastic piece of art. It’ll be about shoes….but maybe it won’t be! Awesome prompt….off to write!
Ok, off to look up that song Tash…have fun with it! doc martin’s eh?
zat ‘put on yer sh*t kickers n’ kick some sh*t’?
you know “my adidas only bring good news
and they are not used as selling shoes
they’re black and white, white with black stripe
the ones I like to wear when I rock the mic…
yeah a litle Run DMC in the house too…smiles.
and the winner is! Maybe I’m showing off too many of my true colors! 🙂 Ya gotta love that song!
Nice prompt. Will see what my muse will have to say about this….(grabs a pair of shoes) see you later ~
cant wait to see what you do with it heaven!
i wanted to write about red shoes but seeing Gay’s beautiful post about it, I wrote about pink shoes…ha..ha…
Now you’re talking. Be back in a bit.
🙂
figured this might be an easy one for the ladies…i know there is lots of inspiration in a certain closet in my house…next to my brown dress shoes, blackk dress shoes and 3 pair of converse canvas…lol
Love the prompts – I have a poem about shoes (red ones) on my blog. Nearly everyone has read it so I won’t link today; but if you haven’t you can see it here:

I love the prompts today. Shoes as a topic is a great one. The shoe sculpture is intriguing and loved the pink “boots”. I know there will be a great reaction! Go dVersepoets!!!
def the red shoes poem is worth checking out gay…hey everyone yesterday was gay’s birthday too…so if you do check it out give her some birthday love!
Hey Gay! I know I got you once already…but hope it was awesome! (And love the red shoes, lady!) Happy Birthday! 🙂
i read that…. love it ~
Mine is a repost…needs work if anyone cares to critique. I love shoes as an object of art. Great prompt, Brian.
Thanks for the inside look of the U2 concert .The Inspiration for shoes is a good one.
I have a poem about my boots I wrote in college but it’s so awful I couldn’t. I just couldn’t. I tried twice to rewrite it but it’s beyond teh beyond
I shared my awfulness! We won’t judge! This isn’t crit afterall 🙂
I had fun with this..thanks! 🙂
I don’t think this is quite the cheery piece that shoes might bring to mind for some folks. But the weekend seems to be full of less than cheery happenings. I did find a piece of Wilie Cole’s art to illustrate my dark entry, but I must say most of his work is whimsical and lighthearted, as well as unique and extremely creative, so my poem’s mood is no reflection on him. Great prompt, as always, Brian.
hedge, yours was amazing…love the descriptors and textures…
This was great! Thank you!
Dude, you know I love shoes, Im all over this one 🙂
ha yours was fun david for sure…great to see you!
A fun prompt, although I gave it a somber turn. Lots of creative poetic responses.
A seedpod becomes a pair of shoes. What? you say.
Mark, you say it very well! Thought your poem was fantastic!
Alright peeps…stepping out of the pub for just a bit to take in a movie…be back later to catch the next round…
Although I love shoes and they are usually a source of fun for me, I chose a dark subject that just popped into my head when I was pondering what to write today.
Gayle
Coming in late, worked yesterday and today, and only just catching up! Sharing a very old one, one of the first things I wrote. It looks like it’s about shoes, but it isn’t. I thought it fit the theme today.
Some many great poems to read, so little time. I’ve read a few and will read more later.
Thank you for this awesome community!
nice to have you here GE…
Shoes eh? hmmm. I went deep into the foul smell of them.
Kind of a late entry – had one mutha of a week 😉 Look forward to reading ~ Rose
oh we are just getting started…it will stay open through the day tomorrow…
i love prompts brian, it gives me that challenge and excitement i need in my life. i just posted about my mind in my day and that just drained all the poetry i’ve got in my body for the day but i will try this:
my heart is in my mind,
my mind is not in my head,
don’t ask me where my shoes are,
because i do not know,
i am a putty in your words.

Took me a while to find the comment button, and to realise I hadn’t joined the Linky list! Silly me! Couldn’t resist posting a poem I wrote years ago – it so fits the bill…

Had to post a 2nd that popped into my head while I was ironing yesterday. It seems poems like to appear while I’m doing mundane things like that.
Have to thank you Brian for the tech help…I just live in the wrong century; what can I say….but love being here!

thank you for a lovely look at the shoes dani…the little ballet shoes are familiar to me…smiles.
Apparently I missed last call (my clock must be a bit slow). Of course, inspiration only hit about 40 minutes ago. I suppose it’s probably better no one read the monstrosity I put together in just under 30 minutes.
swinging by to see what you got…
I didn’t realise there was a time limit to this, wanted to post something, sorry I missed it.

Damn my ruby slippers! I’m late, too, thought the post was today. Anyway, better late than never to be totally naughty! Amy
