If you see me moving a bit slow today, I got in a 3 AM this morning, the muscles in my back are tight as rubber bands and I have quite a few bruises from the events of last night.
Before you think I have been hitting the pub in real life, it was a work related emergency that kept me out until the wee hours of the morning. I do counseling with kids and when you get one of these calls after hours, you kinda know its not really going to be a fun night.
Another thing you realize is that it is probably not going to be one of those situations you rush into, slap a band aid on and get home in time to see the series finale you waited all week to see…thank goodness for DVR, eh.
You take your time to really understand what is going on.
Poetry is a oppositional teenager. Sure you can skim across the surface of a poem, then leave a very superficial comment and you may be right, but in most cases you will miss the richness buried within.
That being said, I hope as you are visiting tonight, you take the time to enjoy what your fellow poetry slingers are saying. Le them know how it affected you, what you liked. And you know what, your interpretation may still not be right, but i think that just adds to it when you can see an angle even the writer had not considered.
So lets get to this, if you are new:
- Post a poem to your blog,
- Link your poem to dVerse (1 per blog, please) by clicking on the Mr. Linky button below.
- This opens a new screen where you’ll enter your information, and where you also choose links to read. Once you have pasted your poem’s blog URL and entered your name, click Submit. Don’t worry if you don’t see your name right away.
- Don’t forget to let your readers know where you’re linking up and encourage them to participate by including a link to dVerse in your blog post.
- Visit as many other poems as you like or can, commenting as you like or can, as well.

Thanks also for pointing out how reading is almost as difficult and rewarding and time consuming as writing a poem. Poetry really is a two way street.

So, 3 am? That is when I wake every day. You got to see my waking hour up close. Glad you are okay and here to relax with the poetry offered. Wonderful advice. There is more to reading than just seeing words. Sometimes the poet infuses meaning with intent that peeks around metaphors and sometimes, the reader finds a meaning that the poet never imagined but one that makes it incredibly personal to them.
I’ll have something light and cold tonight. It is 82 degrees and I’m still trying to recover from yesterday’s sugar overload. *smiling* An evening with dVerse is the perfect antidote.
light and cold sounds good to me beth…its smoking hot here today and i was working out at the farm with another kid today so that will be refreshing…

What a great metaphor. I have to go teach but I always value my Tuesday night interaction (which always spills into the rest of my week) with the talented poets who make up our dVerse community. Sorry to hear you’re exhausted and in pain and my deepest empathy for those kids you’ve counseled.

Brian…your good work doesn’t stop at the tip of your pen…and I’m sorry it has to come with bruises sometimes…but I can well imagine the impact you make. Happy that we get to see you’re word wielding side. Thanks for hosting, brian. I agree with jackie–get some massage action going and kick back. (And I know you know you are given an opportunity to actually make a difference in people’s lives by things like this, even if in the short term it doesn’t seem blindingly obvious. ) Glad you could stagger in to the tend the bar tonight, man, and I won’t tell if you have a medicinal beverage of choice back there in the staff breakroom. In fact, I could use one myself–but it’s nothing a little poetry won’t cure, right?

I’m posting a series of very short (200 words) ‘flashers’….scenes or stories of a couple of bats: “Metamorphosis”.
It’s a relief from working on a book, and I need the mental vacation. They have some references to shibari, which is a Japanese form of bondage..I came across this 5 years ago at least when I started to study Japanese culture and language. It’s really very old, derived from military proceedures into something used in theater…
They aren’t profound stuff, just quirky entertainment. And they make fun of some sacred cows….

Your dedication is inspiring Brian. I haven’t had a lot of extra time this week myself. I’m plotting a new project and I’ve been working. Poor excuse, but I wrote nothing new this since the sprung rhythm piece; I’ll be making the rounds but nothing new is up on my blog homes. Looking forward to reading others. i actually wrote two sprung rhythm pieces for that prompt…never posted the second and will hang on to it in my book of rhymes until sometime when its needed…i really enjoyed that prompt gay

Brian, sounds like a difficult and sad/frustrating job despite a sense of good being done. You are right about lots of things taking up time etc. more than within our control. I have written about three bits of new poems, but may stick with one of them rather than putting up something older – hope so anyway, meaning I may be posting in my own wee hours.

Brian, I’m always amazed that you seem to visit every poet’s contribution every week, and read and comment. Not to mention taking part in some of the other dVerse poetic happenings in between each open link night, and penning your own poems as well. And now, you’ve had this rough night with an intervention yet here you are, tending the pub. Man, you are everywhere, offering your support and doing what needs to be done. Good article, brian, I can really appreciate people that work with children and I’m well aware of the hazards. Bravo to you and all others like you; a special breed. Poetic wise I posted something I probably should not have. It might sound like a light treatment of a serious topic of people. And I may still take the accompanying muzak off because the quality is way too poor even for my low standards. So if anyone wants to hear it, it better be quick. My friends are teasing me greatly. But more important I look forward to reading as many posts as possible. They are always so good and inspiring. Have a great Pub night.

Wow,I think I posted five minutes after the link and I ended up far down the line. I love and analyze everything anyone has to say. Everything is always positive….hmm I like good constructive feedback too….but I never give those either.
I topped the day off with a new haircut.It has only been 7 months oops.
i think the thing with constructive crit is you have to know the person and you need a bit of permission…i got a few that ask for it…and i def dont mind it at all…
