Brian Miller, help me i have poemed and i cant get up, i love tags, i pledge allegiance to read poetry and not just post a link, if a poem falls in the woods alone does anyone hear it?, online poetry, poetry sharing, sharing isnt caring reading is
Last Friday was homecoming at school—after the football game, we had the dance. I did not intend to stay and chaperone the dance. I did stop in to say hi to the students and see there fancy dresses and dashing dress shirts. And then—
For me my ‘and then’s’ usually means someone needs help, or there is trouble—and my hero complex kicks in & 2 hours later, while i might have saved someone’s day, i have missed something else. Note to self: leave the tights at home. Smiles.
Life is about trade offs—sometimes the things you choose are not even bad things, but they can keep you from other things that may be more important. That being said, I am glad you chose to be with us tonight for OpenLinkNight.
I am glad those of you that read others, choose to do so. Hopefully in some small way our words to each other mean something, to validate that choice.
Tonight, someone will choose to share a poem for the first time, unsure what people will think. Tonight someone will put their heart on paper because they think it is about to stop beating. Tonight, someone will risk and love. Tonight, someone will open a door and another will close it. Tonight, someone will spill their drink when they stand up to carry the computer to their spouse so they can read the poem that just rocked their world.
Maybe. You never know.
That’s all part of the magic—like streetlights that, like stars, know when its dark enough to shine in the corners of my mind.
If you are new here, this is how it works:
- Write a poem, post it to your webpage
- Click the Mr. Linky button blow and enter your name and direct URL of your poem
- There you will find others that participate—read, enjoy, tell them what you like, what worked, tell them that another living person actually cares
- Promote yourself and others on social media
- Have fun—life is too short.
See you on the trail ~Brian
Pass me a brew. Smiles…rough day- how can it only be Tuesday?
ha smiles…. after 11 hours in the office today… i wish it was friday already…smiles… a beer for me as well please….smiles
I know! I need something too…and some good poetry to get through this week.
ha. i hear you…a busy day here for sure….
ready for it to be over and just enjoy some poetry…
now nothing rough that lasts more than one day right?
nope there is a one day limit – I read the fine print. There is, however, a renewal clause but I won’t get into that! 🙂
smiles.
there’s much to say about reading and encouraging others and also be read and be encouraged by others… it’s a choice to not just link and run but to stay a bit and see what others have to offer.. and what we can offer in return… happy OLN everyone… looking forward to read until my eyes give in…ha…smiles… ok..that won’t take very long as i’m already really tired… smiles
🙂 It’s fun to read what everyone has to share, a bit intimidating on OLN sometimes with so many poets but awesome too!
smiles…thank goodness our eyes never just deflate you know…smiles….
I will take a ginger Saspirella in a dirty glass, Brian, since the Old West is my regular Tuesday destination before I drop by the dVerse Saloon.
i specialize in dirty glasses….smiles….
No kidding! 🙂
Yes, but you still left us hanging…
ha. i did…
short story….there are 4-5 couples that got saved from making some very poor decisions…..or at least before they could complete those decisions….
Hurrah! Somehow managed to not be doing this late in the evening for a change – I must have forgotten to do something important…. Ah yes, eat! Looking forward to reading all the juicy poems later – toodle-pip!
toodle-pip…ha..i like…smiles…. good to see you freya
ha. hopefully you stop to get some food along the way….
toodle pip….had never heard that one before….
Thank you, Claudia! Toodle pip, indeed! 🙂
Warm greetings Brian and to everyone else too at the bar tonight…
It’s good to back at dVerse and looking forward to catching up and having a real good read up and natter tonight. ..This is my first post since the release of my book see: http://www.scotthastie.com/?page_id=1803 last month. Dizzy times…. Cheers! Scott http://www.scotthastie.com
hey cool…congrats on the book scott
woohoo…def congrats on your book man…that is awesome…..
Lovely post & tags Brian, Happy OLN ~ I’m still out on the road but will be happily reading the poems in a bit ~ Tuesday nights are reserved for my reading, smiles ~
still on the road home? or heading somewhere? feels good when you get there eh? smiles.
Am home now & hitting the trail ~ Smiles ~
I forgot to say – I am so pleased I found this group – it has been fabulous to use my creativity this way and learn from all you clever poets at the same time 🙂 Welcome to any newbies this evening!
hey we are glad you found us as well freya….smiles…
def always try to welcome the newbies!
I love this line: “Tonight someone will put their heart on paper because they think it is about to stop beating.”
Very much describes how I feel about writing poems sometimes. There is such an urgency to that notion.
an urgency and a deep intimacy for me often as well… yeah… def. heart to paper… and we make ourselves a bit vulnerable with it as well… but i always find it’s worth the risk…
ah there is…these are things i always try to remember as i am making my rounds…and leaving little notes for the poets….
After a dozen stops I have to take a breather; the poetics are like rich food, and I need to unbutton my mind for a bit; commenting can be serious business for some of us.
haha….i have had to unbutton a bit after a serious meal…smiles…
I am laughing at myself after reading your dance story. I assumed it was Claudia hosting OLN with the comment about leaving the tights at home. LOL Do you care to elaborate on that statement Brian. Smiles 🙂 Seriously though, I am confused. Anyhoo, so excited it’s open link night. By the way, my nephew just had his homecoming last Saturday night and sis and I hosted the after the dance after party. I know, aren’t we brave? They were up till all hours but their good kids and they had a great time. I think they made great memories sitting at our bonfire, playing ping pong etc…Thanks for hosting Brian-much appreciated 🙂
you know..the tights and the blue shirt with the red S… smiles
but….since you know i danced ballet..(back in the day)..there is def a whole other side of things….hahaha…
Real men can and do wear tights ( I certainly did as an actor ), and skirts/kllts if our butt needs airing out, a women’s panties just for grins.
hey man i would rock a kilt!!!!
Hi Brian and Claudia! Being first to comment is surely an illusion. I never walk into an empty bar!
Brian, I appreciate your comments about the significance behind the poems we read. You have read mine before, but I changed its title from “Hoarding” to “Treasure”–reflecting an inner light or two.
cool…i will drop in any way and see what you got….
happy tuesday susan….
I’m at a conference at work and will get back later to read.. I continue to investigate old FFA..
way cool on investigating old FFA’s …. and have fun at the conference as well
that is really cool….as it def brings them back to mind for me as well…not that i write a whole bunch of form poems but…heh…hope you are having fun man
Brian I found at least a dozen poems in this welcome speech to the Pub. Wow buddy you are on a roll! I am looking forward to the great poetry and great visiting, at this, my favorite watering hole! 🙂
I was going to cheat and put up my poem I wrote for Mag Pie Tales, but hopefully I’ll have some browsers who will look at it after they see the new poem that my friend unwittingly inspired today. 🙂 I hope she forgives me!
hey that is a cool friend that inspires poetry…smiles….be by as soon as i welcome everyone
You are a cool and inspiring friend – ! 🙂
This trade off happened to me yesterday! I had plans and they were altered, but I think I made the best choice… I too am looking forward to reading everyone’s trade offs. Brian I bet you look fab in red tights! 😀
the thing is you often never know in that moment if you are making the right choice, but we try….smiles….ha….me in red tights….maybe i will try to pull that off for the christmas special…
You left us hanging indeed! On the other hand, perhaps you finish your tale in your poem. 🙂
smiles…now there would have been a thought…
I creep in softly…gingerly…soak in Poem Jacuzzi at the Pub…let life’s little things wash over me…
hey!!!! its been like forever! how are you?
Hi Mr. Miller! I know…life sometimes overtakes! Enjoying poking around as usual.
wow….mr miller….making me feel old…or like i am at school….smiles.
🙂
Bri, your tags tell their own story – I like that… 😉
haha i have a few that catch that every time…smiles.
Look forward to reading all the poems! Feel I also have to offer something in return, but I am wrung dry of any poems. So I hope you don’t mind if I link to an older one.
not at all…OLN is old or new or whatever you want to bring….
Hey Brian – I do not think you will stop being superman (at least to us) so you better not leave the tights at home, or at least keep them near your computer. k.
smiles….see note above…if i can be a woman for a day i can wear tights sometime for you all…lol….
Ha. (Maybe spare us, though.) k.
lol….
Hiya all,
Tonight I didn’t spill my drink, didn’t spill the beans, but spilled the red Autumn berries and they became a unit.
berries…..i love berries…i would take berries over chocolate any day….smiles.
Poems on dinner napkins, backs of programs, flyers, hand palms, tee shirts, or scrawled on shithouse walls, or in the thick dust on a flat stone, or in the mold in the bottom of a bucket, or in the fog on a car window, or the steam on a bathroom mirror after a Muse has struck while in the shower; yes, brother, or less spontaneous, more cohesive, like being part 9 of a continuing saga of cinemagenic poetic scenes; hell, brother, it’s all good.
it is all good…i love your series man…and the plot in this one is still untangling but it is so good…its def a not miss on my list every week…smiles…
Brian, folks, is wearing red tights, a black mask to match his mohawk (though the sides are growing back in), his wife’s pink hanky stuffed in the cod piece, with a huge “B” blazoned on his chest, and his short cape is yellow, and his heart is golden.
hahahahahahahahahah i wanna see that picture….smiles…..
I love reading other’s poetry, I just have to keep ducking in and out of the pub to run errands and work, like right now, but I’ll be back soon to visit on some of my fellow linkers.
oh i hear you…i keep checking back…taking little bites here and there…
just got back from the store with my son…
ok – before i collapse on the couch because of hard core tiredness, i go to bed now…smiles… see you tomorrow…
sleep well C
Hey Brian! Happy Tuesday!!!
hiya audrey…smiles…
Bri, dial me up. Thanks for posting for me, too. Cheers! ~ M
hmmm…dialed in…and i bet it was grace that dropped you in….twernt me, but i would have,…smiles.
Smiles ~
Sneaking in late–work as usual. But I’m here! Glad to see there’s still plenty of seating. Heading inside to see what’s being served up this week. Nice to see you tending bar tonight, Brian! *smiles*
come on in….a nice relief from work….
actually i am just leaving mine and about to head home…
so will catch up here in a bit after yours…smiles.
I linked my latest Limerick-Off in Mr. Linky. But here’s something new that hasn’t even made it to my blog yet. 🙂
Inspiration is gone — I’m bereft,
For I fear my dear muse has just left.
And my brain’s auto-rhymer
Is spent — the old-timer
Says, “Write something rhyme-free with heft.”
A serious verse that’s rhyme-free?
I’m sorry — that just isn’t me.
I don’t layer my verse
Or deep meaning disperse.
I’d rather spread light-hearted glee.
If you’re waiting for metaphor, stop.
And a simile simply won’t pop.
My verse just won’t hatch
Without rhyme — that’s the catch:
An unfertilized limerick crop.
So many participants…wow. Woke up at noon and then hair appointment. Had read Brian’s post for OLN on my phone this morning. Hair stylist had sweet decorations for Halloween…even pipecleaner glittery black spiders in the shrubs I passed. A very different Halloween for me. That became my writing inspiration. A happy write, for the most part. Thank you, Brian!
yeah, so hows the hair look?
a different halloween….hmmm…on my way over….
I’m late but finally posted something.
oh you are not late at all…smiles…
HI all – great to return here again this week. So many great posts, and such a good crowd. The scent is still electric. Love this place. I’ve posted for you a simple rendering of the The Sea, at dusk, and the pulling of the ether that seems to resonate in me. I hope you enjoy it. Jay
pretty cool piece man….that one line i pointed out in my comment kinda stilled me…the call of all souls…
I appreciate it Brian. Thanks!
hey no sweat…
Happy Open Link Night, everyone!
hello marilyn…
Reblogged this on like an apple and commented:
My first time sharing at dVerse Open Link Night. I posted the my latest “Friday Found Poem,” http://wp.me/p2YYvK-OE, carved from a list of odd titles in James Clerk Maxwell’s personal library. It is fun to read poems from some familiar friends from my carpe diem friends, along with many other poets I never read before.
welcome…have fun….explore…
i’ll jump over and see what you are bringing…smiles.
Good evening everyone.
This is my first visit to OpenLinkNight. Sounds like a great place to hang out on a Tuesday night. Looking forward to being inspired by the creativity of others.
Cheers! 🙂
very cool…glad to have you…enjoy yourself, visiting others
i def get inspiration by the creativity i find here…smiles.
This is a fun time to visit. I feel like I need a drink this week. Barkeep, your cheapest rotgut beer, and keep ’em coming. *wink

ok banana..sorry it was there for the taking 🙂
ha. good morning….
smiles
good morning… played catch up and now off to work…will be back in the evening to read more….
What you have written for tonight – is poetry itself. Hello everyone – happy writing and of course reading by one and all. 🙂 Pass me a Mojito please with plenty of ice 😉
ha! i have been out of ONL for quite sometime and it has extended over to other poetics too! Too many things to manage esp with festivities in this part of the world. Hope to get the scales balanced soon and as said, yep, life is a trade off a little to get and give! 🙂
A beautiful sensitive post expressing an understanding of poets exposing their innermost feelings.
” Tonight , someone will choose to share a poem for the first time, unsure what people will think. Tonight someone will put their heart on paper because they think it is about to stop beating.. Tonight, someone will risk and love. Tonight someone will open a door and another will close it.”
Wonderful writing Brian. The corners of your mind are dazzling tonight. As you would
say, this paragraph rocks my world:)
ha. thank you cressida….smiles….you never really know where the writers are at or were at when we read their words….but i try to be sensitive….ok, so sometimes i can be silly too…smiles.
Good morning ~ I know you are aware of this Brian but one of our good friend, David King has passed away. We will all missed his excellent writing.
http://picsandpoems.blogspot.ca/
most def…i was sad to see that this morning…i will truly miss him…
Brian hi…. I know I am late. …late for a very important date… 😉 have attempted to post but having trouble, again. But enjoyed sipping my Gin and reading this weeks posts/comments. Cheers Max
smiles…i will get you straight…catching up now myself as the day is done…
i’m in! happy cooler weather ya’ll 😉
oh yeah i am all about that….
I’m glad to share this one – Passing Mount Hood – a beautiful trip home.
hey i have been to hood….
Thought-provoking post, Brian. We never know the impact of the seemingly insignificant choices we make. Sometimes they can save a life and we may never know it!
true that…what seems insignificant to us can mean the world to another…how are you? enjoying your break?
I have been missing from OLN – I hope it is not against the rules to post twice. I just enjoyed the spine poetry so much, and then I had a chance to do a glosa again…
Grace, I am so sorry to hear about Dave. I remember his poem about his wife so vividly. His kind words will surely be missed by all of us dearly.
it is sad about dave…have something in the works to honor him….
I am saddened to hear of Dave’s death. It is always a terrible blow when one of us
dies…terribly sad.
Yes Cressida, I am just beginning to realise how close the bond has become in the poetry blogosphere.
I am so touched to hear that you are going to do something Brian. I have a feeling Dave drew much comfort from poetry and the community. And wrote as long as he could.
May he rest in peace.
…as usual…late for the pub…just call me the late Mrs. Snape!!!…no really though…I’ve tried to put up a you tube reading of this poem…first it worked and then it failed!!…but ~I shall keep trying….thanks for having me at the bar…mines a…..
smiles….always good to see you….
look forwrd to that video…
