advent, Alice in Wonderland, heading towards christmas, let's light a candle and talk poetry, poetry prompts, pre-christmas poetry
…smiles… that’s about the only thing probably that Alice in Wonderland and Advent… the pre-christmas time have in common… still… both are our inspiration servers for Poetics this week… and why’s that…?
Because both of them are timely topics — we’re right in the middle of Advent (one day I will share my Advent wreath story… i LOVE Advent wreaths… and my fam FEARS the day of the first of Advent cause they never know what off-beat piece they have to endure for the next four weeks in our living room… yes… they’re suffering.. badly… smiles)
And Alice..? Well… I very seldom watch tv – but I did last week and by accident stumbled into the Alice in Wonderland movie with Johnny Depp playing the hatter and Ann Hathaway the white queen… and I loved it.. and it moved me on a deeper level… and I was carrying some thoughts around me still when I boarded the train to Munich…
so… it’s your choice… you can either write a pre-christmas Advent poem… preparation… tradition…decoration… share your Advent story with us or even give the christmas decoration a voice
or… write an Alice in Wonderland poem… about her, one of the characters or in the style of it.. off-beat conversations.. poems which tell a wondrous story… let’s fly a bit… smiles
And if you’re here for the first time…. this is how it works..
- Write a poem that fits the prompt above
- Post it on your blog then copy the direct URL to your poem and copy it together with your name in the Mr. Linky widget above
- Read others that have linked up with us as well and leave them a comment on their blog
- Have fun… and most important… beware of the Jabberwocky… smiles

Hello, Mulled whine and gingerbread for me thanks… I do enjoy advent quite a lot… Here in Sweden we light a lot of candles to drive the darkness away.. but I could do without some of the Christmas shopping.. happy saturday to you all
claudia said:
ah…mulled whine and gingerbread sounds good… i enjoy advent as well… we have quite some christmas markets in our area which lights the dark in a beautiful way as well
Mary said:
Oh, I love Christmas markets. I would love to be in Germany to be able to visit one this time of year. (If you visit the Poets United Website tomorrow, even if you don’t share a poem, you will see Christmas market photos as well.) The closest Christmas market to me here is in Chicago. They have one there every year, modeled after the German market. I HAVE visited that one.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
There are Christmas markets all over here in Stockholm area.. both food and Christmas decorations.. maybe driving to a castle market would be something tomorrow.
Mary said:
Oh, that sounds wonderful, Bjorn!!
claudia said:
castle market sounds very cool… in basel the christmas market is next to the old cathedral… beautiful atmosphere..
Mary said:
Hi Claudia, I will look forward to reading your advent wreathe story someday. Smiles. I have never seen the Alice in Wonderland movie you mentioned. I remember being in a theater when there were coming attractions & thinking the movie was a bit frightening, one NOT to take my grandchildren to. What would your viewpoint be on that? One for kids or not?
claudia said:
i know that alice frightened the bones out of me when i was a kid… maybe it’s more a story for grown ups than for kids…or maybe that’s just me… i’m over-sensitive… i loved that alice movie with johnny depp… think you should watch it first though…and then decide if you take the little ones…
Mary said:
I do think it might be more for grown-ups, Claudia. Actually there are a lot of stories we read when we were young that were really scary, when you think about it. Hansel and Gretel, Snow White (with the queen with the poisoned apple), etc. Ha, even Humpty Dumpty in the nursery rhyme, as I think about it too.
brian miller said:
smiles….i think many of them were not originally written for children but due to their nature were relegated to children…i remember some fear around alice as well…i remember watching the movie on tv when i was young…
Mary said:
I do think you are right, Brian.
brian miller said:
so i wanna see your wreath claudia…smiles…christmas def gets a little like the mad hatter to me…nice relaxing day here….with the ice storm coming in this evening i may be stuck in the house for a few days….
claudia said:
maybe you can even ice-skate in the driveway….smiles
Grace said:
Advent or Alice, lovely challenges Claudia ~ We should see that wreath sometime perhaps ~ Wishing you all lovely Saturday ~
claudia said:
haha…that wreath… it’s made of old wood that is pressed and painted white… and then…there’s only space for three candles inside… (i miscalculated it a bit..ha..) so one has to be a bystander… you know…. my husband almost got a heart attack…smiles
Gabriella said:
I have not seen the film you mention Claudia. As for the book, I read it a long time ago and have few vivid memories of it so I opted for Advent! Enjoy the holiday season, Claudia!
claudia said:
i have to read the book again… loved how you captured the advent spirit gabriella

Really fun prompt, Claudia. Two unlikely topics but great to have a choice. I love Advent too. I’d like to write one of each but will post them another time. Just can’t spend much time on the computer right now. Perhaps Advent for my Monday post.

Advent to me is more of a gradual realization that once again Christmas is upon us. In all its glory, or possibly, its repetitiveness. No escape. Hoping against hope that it will actually renew feelings of peace and goodwill in a world of turmoil.
Not my best time of the year.
claudia said:
i hear you… the real meaning of christmas gets burried under all the hectic and consumerism sometimes….
claudia said:
ok – bedtime for me over here… will check back in in the morning and catch up with the overnites…. see you…

I had to research the Advent wreath–I had only heard of Advent calendars. Put me on the list to hear your story, Claudia. This was fun, but I did not get Alice in. Perhaps she would sing the Hallelujah Chorus. It’s almost 2 am here. I’ll be back to read this evening, when it’s really Sunday here.
claudia said:
smiles… she most probably would sing the hallelujah chorus… and the mad hatter as well maybe…smiles

I love both Advent and Alice! Planning to put up a tree today if one will fit in my car. And Alice (especially the Looking Glass volume) is one of my all-time favourite books. I hope you don’t mind if I link to an older poem of mine which was inspired precisely by Alice and the White Knight.
claudia said:
i don’t mind at all…enjoyed your poem marina sofia and have fun putting up the tree…

Hi Claudia, I’m fashionably late for this prompt … smiles. I love the idea of Advent though my share turned out a bit blue. Smiles and thank you 🙂
claudia said:
you know… indigo blue is just perfect…. and yeah… you can def. feel terribly lonely in a crowd… happened a bit to me on my business trip to munich last week…ugh…
Loredana Donovan said:
Thanks, Claudia! Glad you liked the shades of blue in my poem … yeah, indigo is nice … it actually has a spiritual meaning, I think … introspection … smiles.
