“It’s time to go.”
“Alright, just straightening a few things up before we close up shop.”
“Ha. Joe already polished the glasses, look at that.”
“Think I will listen once more to the poem we all read together on our anniversary. Just got to find a quarter for the juke box.”
“Ah well—it will wait.”
“I hope everyone has a good holiday—how ever they spend it.”
“So what does the new year bring with it?”
“I dunno. I really don’t know.”
“I will be seeing you around then?”
“Always.”
“Alright then, be well.”
“You too.”

🙂
shalom my friend and the warmest wishes for the holiday for you and your family….

To those of you who celebrate Christmas – Merry Christmas. To those for whom the New Year is more significant – Happy Hogmanay. To everyone else – Happy Holidays … smiles.
See you all in 2014 – if not before 🙂
Thanks Tony. I think it is only the US which does Holiday these days. Holiday to the rest of the English speaking world is what Americans call vacation. It has gotten complex for some. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you.
travel light good sir…and all the best to you and yours over the break…merry christmas….hohoho
will miss you guys! happy holidays and have fun 🙂
ah we are only a comment box away you know…smiles.

Wishing you Brian, Claudia and families and of course all the writers who pour out their hearts in DVerse a beautiful Christmas and a happy, healthy 2014. I am sure I will see faces peeking out from their writing spots throughout the break. As Mary so delightfully wrote tra la la la la la la la laaaaaa. Thank you everyone- Enjoy! From the ‘sheila’ Down Under’….. smiles
have a crackin holiday…hope its a ripper….hahaha
i will def be seeing you…
love that crackin holiday – oh to be somewhere in the Bahamas …Melbourne will have to do and I’ll be seein you also…
By the way, do any of the Americans present know when and why Christmas was changed to Holidays in the US? I remember enough Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra songs to know it must only be years, not decades. Just curious. I always like to know why things happen.
It’s been recent, rosross, in response to “political correctness” and in an effort to be more inclusive. For myself, I still say Merry Christmas. Because we are such a diverse country we have people celebrating so many various religious and secular events. Merry Christmas, Happy 2014 to you.
Thanks Victoria. Well, I think you can take political correctness too far. And one of the good things about Christmas being secular as well as Christian is that it is the one religious festival which is now inclusive. I know when we lived in India, Hindus and Muslims, they loved Christmas. And other nations have not felt the need to be ‘politically correct’ about Christmas and they are equally diverse in religious terms. But no doubt, as with all things, there are more issues at work than people know. I mean, who complained in the first place? No doubt you will probably never know but a minority group I am sure given the huge percentage of Christians in the US, who, one presumes, would not complain.
But there you are. I think it is a reminder that you can please some of the people some of the time and not all of the people all of the time. I just hope in the US that Ramadan, Hannuka, Kwanzaa, Deepavali and all other religious festivals have also been reduced to Happy Holidays. That would only be fair.
But Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year to you too.
Since I live in a diverse place, I ask people, “Do you celebrate anything at this time of year?” They answer Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, just finished Ramadan, the Solstice, “I’m agnostic.” Then I respond accordingly. This is NOT a “Christian nation,” nor was it “founded on Judeo-Christian ethics,” as some would like. We are a hearty stew, getting tastier with each new culture. This little pastor’s wife wishes all peace and love, not just now, but all year long! Amy
Thanks for pointing out that its not reduction but inclusion. My Meeting, however, which used to have Christmas dinner–and is Christian–now has Winter Dinner instead. I like to argue with them.
I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season! Thanks again for all that you do!
i wish you all the best this holiday as well….
Answering my own question. I did a quick search and it says it is because television channels, commercial entitites and public organisations, cannot refer to anything religious and in the US Christmas is seen as a Christian celebration. Given the fact that Americans are the most religious of any developed nation and it is Christianity in the main, this perhaps explains it. Other nations have easily embraced a secular Christmas and with less religiosity have no rules about religion or names, which explains why the use of the term Happy Holidays has remained particular to the US and everyone else still does Christmas.
Whatever you call it, enjoy the season and see you in the New Year.
Ah, you answered your own question in more detail than I did!
christmas is not the only holiday this season as well…i guess then we could do a post for each…
I think asked folks to write about whatever holiday they celebrate might be nice. Then we’ll see some real flavor; after all, this place isn’t called “dverse” for nothing, hee hee.
Also, re: Christmas. It’s supposed to be a Christian celebration, but commercialization of it far overshadows the meaning. The early Christians used Dec. 25 as Jesus’ birthday to woo folks away from the Solstice and other celebrations, as though this was the “right one.” Hey, I’m Christian, and I have no problem saying this!
And yes, a special thanks to all those who make dVerse not just possible but what it is. 🙂
I’ll miss you all but, quite frankly, welcome a break. I’m not planning on closing down shop on my blog but will reduce the number of posts for awhile. Happy Holidays to all of you, however you may celebrate them. Have a little eggnog on me. :0)
amen…i am def ready for a break…and relishing the freedom of it…i have been writing short story again for the first time in a long time…posted one….sent two off for publication today….ah, having fun for a bit…smiles.

Wishing everyone the happiest of holidays.
Merry Christmas to my friends and poetry family.
merry christmas to you as well beth…and in light of recent trouble, i hope they are filled with joy…and happy new memories…
Make magic for those boys and your wonderful wife, Brian 🙂 I hope you have the best holiday ever.

Now seeing rosross’s comment I am going to say Merry Christmas and Happy New year to all my friends here. I too may see some of you on other sites. I can’t believe it’s already this time of year. Where does the time go? Thanks to all my new friends at dVerse. You’ve all made me feel very welcome this past year. I appreciate the time you take to read my work and for your friendship. Here at dVerse, Solstice and Christmas and New Year and all the other celebrations have become a three week holiday, one that I hope is merry, restful, productive and clarifying. I know I will see some of you. Claudia–I have enjoyed the addition of your art work this year. Brian–I rarely read short stories, but if I had a link I’d rush over to read one of yours. Hint, hint. Bless you all for being dVerse and keeping a Pub that promotes poetic drafts and lovely exchanges.
I had written a new poem for today, forgetting that the Pub was closing for holiday. It’s called “What We Carry.” (http://susanspoetry.blogspot.com/2013/12/the-weight-of-living.html)
PS. I love today’s post, and I believe it is a real conversation between Brian and Claudia.

Making your way in the world today takes everything you’ve got.
Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help a lot.
Wouldn’t you like to get away?
Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows your name,
and they’re always glad you came.
You wanna be where you can see,
our troubles are all the same
You wanna be where everybody knows
Your name.
You wanna go where people know,
people are all the same,
You wanna go where everybody knows
your name.
smiles… i will bring my guitar and sing this sometime between christmas and new year with just a candle throwing some light against the pub walls…smiles

Yep…I totally agree. Love the friendly atmosphere in this pub. I’m still getting to know my fellow poets, but even as a relative newbie, I’ve been made to feel welcome.
Well, I am so glad to be a small part of this talented community, for all the members of the team , the efforts and care taken for the quality of this site; I, too, think the theme for Cheers is so appropriate for this creative inclusive group, where everyone appreciates one’s individual writing progress – Merry Christmas to all and a poetic New Year!
