Hello friends, this is Gayle and I’m pleased to be your hostess for Open Link Night.
We have now passed the Winter Solstice and our days here in the United States are slowly growing longer, little by little. It always raises my spirits as I realize this. Even though I live in a part of the country that has almost perpetually sunny days, I sense a slight depression when it starts getting dark at 5:00PM during the winter! I always look forward to the time change in March when our days will once again return to staying light until closer to 8:30PM during our summer months. Quite a time difference!
I know many of you are still experiencing icy, snowy conditions where you reside and are clinging tightly to the promise of spring, and I hope that it comes sooner than later for you. We’re heading for a cool down the next few days here on the east coast of Florida and are looking forward to it. So far, we’ve had an extraordinarily warm and rainy “winter.”
My sister and her husband visited from the Orlando area recently and we spent most of our days outside doing a little hiking. One day we drove to a nearby state wildlife preserve to walk and because of all the rain recently, we ended up wading through water that at times reached up to my knees. I took my shoes off for most of the walk and slogged through the trails that were under water. It actually was fun and I don’t remember the last time I had gone barefoot like that—maybe not since childhood…smiles.
If you feel comfortable doing so, why don’t we share a little something with each other today as we link up any poem of our choice. It can help instill in each of us that we truly are a supportive community that values each of our contributors.
The following is how you link your poem and our guidelines for participation:
- Leave a small comment below, and participate in our discussion.
- Enter a link directly to your 1 poem and your name by clicking Mr. Linky below. You will find others’ links there for you to visit.
- Read and COMMENT on other poet’s work, we all come here to have our poems read and a reciprocated comment is expected.
- Promote your site and any poetry you like on the social media of your choice.

Good evening.. This week has been one of comfort for us.. The ice on the bay between where we live and work is solid enough to take a shortcut. So it’s only 4 km now instead of 11… But it’s still dark when we leave and dark when we come home… Happy Open Link

Hello everyone! hello Gayle! Come up a little north and play with me in the snow storm we are getting tomorrow! thank you for hosting. I hope you all are well. I am posting my poem from Mary’s Poetics Tuesday since I was late with it. A wonderful prompt.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
I agree … It as a great prompt..
Bodhirose said:
Hi Toni, I wouldn’t mind seeing some snow again. It would be fun. Look forward to your poem.
Victoria C. Slotto said:
Gayle, thanks for being behind the bar today. My hope is to have something up by tomorrow. I am having my eyes dilated soon and not sure how well I’ll be able to see. I’ve missed being around that last week or two as we had an extended celebration for our 25th Anniversary…including out-of-town guests. Looking forward to reading, sooner or later.
And I don’t know about wading in Florida…snakes, alligators, parasites? Yikes!
whimsygizmo said:
My son LOVES exploring in Florida. He was hoping for more snakes this past trip. 😉
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
Ha.. How about paddling with gators?
whimsygizmo said:
We got to see baby gators last time (a little over a year ago), and he desperately wanted to pick one up. The mama was nowhere in site, but I reminded him she was nearby, and could rip his face off. 😉
Bodhirose said:
Good advice for your son, De. Mama gators would rip his face off! Yikes! 🙂
Bodhirose said:
It was an experience, Victoria. The water was clean as it had just been raining but I had my eyes peeled for snakes. Didn’t see any, No gators either. My sister, her husband and I love birding and we saw some beauties out there. We all had our binoculars. I’ve gone canoeing or kayaking lots of times in Florida waters and most every time there are alligators on the banks but I’ve never seen one near me in the water. As long as they know their place I’m okay with sharing the waterways with them. 🙂
Victoria C. Slotto said:
I love birding, too–but I would need to wear boots up to my eyeballs there! As for gators…always fun to see them when the pro golfers hit their shots close by. Think I’d take a penalty shot, thank you.
Bodhirose said:
Oh, yes, I’d forgotten about the gators on the links. Very common to see them in those ponds.

My mother lived on the West Coast. Ft. Myers beach is so beautiful. White sand, gentle waves and sunsets that seem to have been created just for photographers and painters. There are many wonderful conservation areas in Florida and a couple of responsible communities that don’t allow high rises, respect the land, water, and wild life. So much beauty in the midst of tourist ugly. Crystal clear springs that beg you to come and splash!
Bodhirose said:
I love Ft. Myers. I have some pretty amazing memories of wildlife that I witnessed there. The Gulf waters are my favorite, just so beautiful. Yes, there sure is some “tourist ugly” here too.

Great to read it again 🙂
Bodhirose said:
Hello Sanaa, of course we’ll like it. 🙂 Thanks for joining in!
whimsygizmo said:
Hi, Gayle. Where are you on the gulf? My great aunt lives in Englewood, and we were just in Venice to visit with her, over New Year’s. It was indeed a little unseasonably warm. 😉 Gulf sunsets are my absolute favorite.
We’re looking at a high of 60 here in southern Nevada, after a few weeks of crazy chill. Headed out soon for a walk under this cobalt sky, to try to stave off the last of a migraine.
Happy writing to all! Looking forward to reading everybody’s poems.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
My aunt live in Sarasota.. But it’s been a while since I was there… We might go there later this year..
whimsygizmo said:
It’s all just so beautiful. Water everywhere. As a girl with a deep Lake Ache, and a penchant for salty ocean toes (who lives in the desert), I love every minute we’re there.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
Water in Sweden is to cold for toes… It’s actually solid right now. I hope to skate in the weekend..
whimsygizmo said:
I LOVE to ice skate! Jealous! We have super rink-dink rinks here for Christmas (again, desert), but there’s a gorgeous one up in Lake Tahoe.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
I hope to skate on the sea… 😉
whimsygizmo said:
Awesome!
I finally got to kayak on the (Pacific) ocean this past summer. Fantastic.
kanzensakura said:
Like I have said, skate on Bro! I really enjoy ice skating as well. Brutally cold lately but not enough to solid freeze any ponds/lakes. But there are a couple of inside ice rinks and when one is old and retired, one can go when the rink isn’t crowded and you can just soar around the space. My husband sits rinkside, wrapped up and watching, and sometimes applauds. If I do a “fancy” step, he has a piece of paper he holds up – 10….it is fun. How fun it would be to skate to work. Like in Holland during the winter and their canals with ice boats and skaters.
Bodhirose said:
Hi De, I’m on the east coast of Florida in the town of Sebastian. It’s between Vero Beach and Melbourne. Today’s high temperature was around 72 or so. I love the Gulf coast of Florida, it’s just beautiful over there. Love Sanibel Island and the areas around there. Such amazing wildlife and beautiful, white sand beaches…waters are turquoise blue.
whimsygizmo said:
Sorry, I misread. Or rather, read “east coast” and for some reason was still thinking sunset. Ha. I grew up for awhile in on both coasts: Daytona Beach, and Bradenton.
Oh, yes! Sanibel is stunning. Sigh. How I ever ended up stranded in the desert, I will never know. 😉
kanzensakura said:
I like the desert! Used to go with wild group to view meteor showers, but the Mojave.
whimsygizmo said:
It absolutely has its beauty, that’s for sure. We have some amazing slices of sky, sometimes. And sunsets. I really do love it. It’s just that I long for water. But we’re blessed to travel some, so that helps. 😉
Victoria C. Slotto said:
I’m a desert rat, for sure, spending my year between the high and low desert. Even the starkness of the Mojave has its beauty–if only folks wouldn’t litter the highway I drive several times a year (395). Sunsets here in the CA desert and in Reno just take my breath away…and show up often enough in my poetry.
Bodhirose said:
Welcome and hello everyone! I’ll be around a little later to visit and comment.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
I’m off to bed… It’s getting late here.. I hope I will not have any nightmares.

Mary said:
Oh, I am a bit jealous right now of those who live in Florida! I just checked, and the temperature here is 25 degrees! And this is high compared to what we had last week. Smiles. A man I know told me this morning that he is going ICE fishing on a nearby lake & is all excited about that. Me, I am not a great fan of being out in the cold, but just returned from walking the treadmill at the gym. Nice to find out a bit of news from everyone here at the bar. After all, that’s what people do at a ‘bar,’ don’t they? Share stuff! Thanks for hosting, Gayle.
whimsygizmo said:
Sending you some sunshine, Mary. We’re almost up to 60 now. A beautiful day.
Bodhirose said:
It’s my pleasure to host today, Mary. That’s right, people chat and share stuff at a bar! I’m not a big fan of the cold either. If it dips below 70 I’m “cold.” 🙂 So silly I know. Mary, where exactly are you?
kanzensakura said:
Haha. I’m a husky pup and love the snow!
Bodhirose said:
Good for you, enjoy the snow, Toni, I’m glad you’re so happy!
whimsygizmo said:
Ha! Love this! I think I might be a Lake Labrador. 😉
whimsygizmo said:
If there’s a “5 on the front” (as low as 50 or above), I usually have on flip-flops, and a tank top, with the possibility of an outer layer. 😉 My happy place is between 50 and 70. 75 is acceptable. Anything over 80 is getting a little toasty for me. We’re in the Vegas area (up to 120 in the summer), and I just have to literally get out of here for much of the summer, whenever possible. 😉

Carol J Forrester said:
Ah, well England provides endless opportunities for both and I make use of that. The fiancée despairs of my boot collection.
Bodhirose said:
So true, De. I only have one pair of boots and a couple of scarves. We just don’t get much opportunity to wear them. I get tempted to buy more but really it would be a waste.
whimsygizmo said:
I have waaaaaaay too many scarves for a desert girl. But I LOVE them. 😉

My CIDP balance issues have become more pronounced, making it very hard to stand in one spot without swaying. You can imagine that this makes acting on stage quite difficult, but my director has given me a last hurrah as the Aged Shakespearian actor in THE FANTASTICKS. I use a walking stick, & all my stumbling can work for the character. She has stated that my disability aside, I still have tremendous talent & a passion for performing, so she accommodates my blocking. I am so grateful.
Pleasant Street said:
Anyone can hear in your recordings what a passion you have for performing. Bravo Glenn- that is awesome to hear.
I need to look up the Fantasticks. I have not seen that one
Bodhirose said:
Glenn, I’m happy to hear that you have a part in another acting gig in spite of your balance issues. Break a leg! (Do actors still say that to each other?)
kanzensakura said:
That is great Glenn. I really liked the Fantasticks. Good for your director. I have no doubt you will steal the show. Just don’t mention the Scottish king…. 🙂
whimsygizmo said:
Bravo, Glenn! I can certainly see that dramatic flair and talent in your words. 🙂

Happy OLN! Hope everyone is doing good, and keeping safe if you are experiencing storms. This year has been crazy weather. Here today was in 50s and the wind was strong, which kicked up so much dust in the air, my eyes are gritty. West Texas is like that, though. It can rain and blow dirt at the same time! Will enjoy reading your poems! 🙂
Bodhirose said:
Hi Barbara, happy OLN! Such extremes of weather from different parts of the world…rain and blowing dirt at the same time, wow!
ghostmmnc said:
It happens that way quite a lot here. After it’s over, the car wash owners are happy.
kanzensakura said:
Well, I guess Texas just wants to give people a mudbath – 🙂 It is getting close to your religious observance time, isn’t it? Or have I missed it?
ghostmmnc said:
Yes, a mud bath is right! …Oh, are you talking about Easter? That will be at the end of March this year. Thanks for asking! 🙂

Hello, Gayle, my computer crashed last night, so I only managed to get it going this morning and am linking up late. Maybe the computer too is struggling to cope with the winter conditions. We started the week with snowfall – which the area (which lives off its winter sports) badly needed, but it made driving conditions hazardous and it seems we are all coming down with coughs and colds too. Now the snow has melted (at least down here, hopefully not on the mountains) and it’s just wet and cloudy. Luckily, we have poetry to cheer us up! Look forward to reading all your poems today.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
I think computers are devious creatures.. Fortunately I have many of them.. So I can always be here… We finally have real winter here… Tomorrow I hope to have wings of ice
Bodhirose said:
I wouldn’t doubt that the winter conditions cause computer crashes. They do seem to be a bit iffy even under the best of conditions. Stay warm and keep healthy, Marina.

Ah Gayle….did join you at the bar for a quick read yesterday — but out of town with family so just posting up this morning. Shall take a meander around other’s works later today and into tomorrow. Cold settling in her — but Boston shall miss the blizzard heading to Washington DC. Much easier to maneuver cold city streets than snowy ones! 🙂 Thanks for tending the pub!

Nice to have you here.. Wnter is great for poetry.
Bodhirose said:
Hi Lillian, glad to see you. I appreciate you taking the time apart from your family to link up. I tell you, I do not miss the heavy duty winters of Boston…and the blizzards that swept through. I’m glad you’ll be missing the latest one. Stay warm! And you’re very welcome, it’s my pleasure to be here. 🙂

We are finally getting snow here in Tennessee and lots of it!! I really enjoy the beauty of snow although I realize that many people in the South don’t like to drive in it. I can’t wait for Spring, though. I send my best wishes to everyone here at open link night! ❤

Gay Reiser Cannon said:
Hi Gayle. Good to see you behind the bar. I have been working on a bunch of vignettes based on the choreography of Nina Bausch a rather avant garde German dancer and choreographer. She died a couple of years ago but there are videos and films of her work. It is very moving, disturbing, and modern.
I wondered if I could produce similar results with words. It is my idea of what the dance might be saying or a spin-off of my own reactions to it. They ran pretty long, so I am breaking them up (and even that seems long by my usual length of poem) into ten vignettes apiece. I will present the next ones in subsequent OLNs.
Let me know if you think they work, if they’re poetry or not, and what if any affect they have on you. If you can only read a few, I understand..just let me know. I will try to get around to you guys this weekend. Still lots going on here, and lots of appointments but I’ll do the best I can. Thanks, Gay
Bodhirose said:
Hi Gay, I just stopped in before bed to catch up with a few more links and saw your message here and have just read your first set of vignettes. I’ve commented on your blog.

Hope you are all safe in the snow and storms – predictions weren’t looking too good when I went to bed last night! All bright-eyed and bushy-tailed now, so am going to have another round of poetry reading. Nina Bausch-inspired vignettes sound lovely (big ballet fan here!).
