Hi everyone! Welcome to our OpenLinkNight ! This is your opportunity to link 1 poem of your choice as this is no prompt-day. For those who missed the Mr Linky deadline the past week or this Tuesday’s poetics about the “muse mixology” poem, this is also your opportunity to share your poem. I also want to remind you that our Haibun Monday is still open the whole week.
I would like to share a poem by the Elizabeth Alexander, Praise Song for the Day:
Each day we go about our business,
walking past each other, catching each other’s
eyes or not, about to speak or speaking.
All about us is noise. All about us is
noise and bramble, thorn and din, each
one of our ancestors on our tongues.
Someone is stitching up a hem, darning
a hole in a uniform, patching a tire,
repairing the things in need of repair.
Someone is trying to make music somewhere,
with a pair of wooden spoons on an oil drum,
with cello, boom box, harmonica, voice.
A woman and her son wait for the bus.
A farmer considers the changing sky.
A teacher says, Take out your pencils. Begin.
We encounter each other in words, words
spiny or smooth, whispered or declaimed,
words to consider, reconsider.
We cross dirt roads and highways that mark
the will of some one and then others, who said
I need to see what’s on the other side.
I know there’s something better down the road.
We need to find a place where we are safe.
We walk into that which we cannot yet see.
Say it plain: that many have died for this day.
Sing the names of the dead who brought us here,
who laid the train tracks, raised the bridges,
picked the cotton and the lettuce, built
brick by brick the glittering edifices
they would then keep clean and work inside of.
Praise song for struggle, praise song for the day.
Praise song for every hand-lettered sign,
the figuring-it-out at kitchen tables.
Some live by love thy neighbor as thyself,
others by first do no harm or take no more
than you need. What if the mightiest word is love?
Love beyond marital, filial, national,
love that casts a widening pool of light,
love with no need to pre-empt grievance.
In today’s sharp sparkle, this winter air,
any thing can be made, any sentence begun.
On the brink, on the brim, on the cusp,
praise song for walking forward in that light.
You can listen to Elizabeth’s beautiful reading of this poem here.
To join us for Thursday’s OpenLinkNight, which happens every other week, here’s how to join:
See you at the poetry trail. ~Grace~
Happy OLN everyone… Grace will come by later, so I pour the drinks for a while.
Thank you for holding the fort Bjorn ~ I am now hitting the poetry trail ~ Hi everyone ~
Happy OLN and thank you for hosting tonight! I have linked a tanka and fancy a wee dram on this cold evening :o)
We all need those dreams these days.
:o)
Drams, dreams. Make mine a hot buttered rum please.
☺
Happy OLN and thanks for hosting, Grace. Enjoyed this poem very much — ah the power of words! 🙂 “Any sentence begun….on the cusp.” Love that idea.
Very much watching the news of Boston’s blizzard while we are here in Bermuda’s winter where, tomorrow, they’re predicting it will be very cold: 60 degrees 🙂 Love it!
Look forward to reading a bit tonight….and tomorrow AM with my morning coffee!
Nice to hear from your wonderful place in the sun… no blizzard here, but cold enough for ice.
We did have a deluge of rain last night….but here in Bermuda, where the rain is caught in the ridges of the roofs and funnels to tanks below each house….that rain is drinking water from heaven! 🙂
Ah.. rain is a great gift… We used to collect rainwater in summer for our seaside cottage before we got water from the tap.
What magic, to collect water like that…
Happy OLN! ❤️ sharing my poem “Love Song” hope you all like it. Thank you for hosting us, Grace 😀
Nice to have you here Sanaa.. hope all is well in your early morning.
Its a good start! 😀
Wow, early morn, or getting dark, we here at the pub pass the baton of dawn…
Dawn is like a baton passed around the world.
Thank you, Grace and others for hosting. Love OLN ! it gives hope to a hopeless world at times.
Poetry does keep us warm when the weather is cold I think
Appreciate your support Jane ~ Poetry for me is an outlet these crazy days ~
I think for many of us, it is therapy.
Going off to bed… see you all tomorrow.
Schlaff gut, Bjorn
See you tomorrow ~
Have enter a poem, I wrote last year, who’s sentiment are ever truer today, for me, as I struggle through my annual fall/winter depression. One of the joys, of living, in a northern country.
Thanks for dropping by Therisa ~
That poem, Grace, is CRAZY good. Wow. I need that on my wall.
You can watch in youtube her reading the poem, Thanks for dropping by ~
Hi everyone–I often work on Thursdays, but am home recovering from hip surgery–looking forward to reading
Hope you are recovering nicely Audrey ~ Thanks for joining us ~
Oh no, you poor thing. How are you??? That sounds terrifying!
I linked a poem about travel and then wondered how far away from home I wanted to actually go.
Travel is best with a companion, smiles ~ Thanks for linking up Frank ~
Nearly dinner-time Friday night in Australia. Between the chiropractor’s appointment and lunch with a friend I wrote a second piece for De’s ‘Mixocology’ prompt, but it didn’t make the deadline so I am linking it here instead. (And a nasty little thing it is, bwahaha!)
Late to the show, missed this last night but hope to do some reading and roaming around your blogs today, as OLN is always a joy and concert of diversity. I’ve linked a rather strange, uncharacteristic prose-poem thingy. Been experimenting with new forms and wanted to see what people thought. Don’t be shy about criticising!
Hi Grace and dVerse poets. I’ve missed you all for the past week or so, having had only a Kindle to read on, I had trouble commenting. My laptop crashed due to a hard drive failure shortly after I emailed an updated eulogy to the vicar who led my Mum’s funeral service – I think she wanted to tell me I’d written enough and it was tiem to let go. I’ve just collected my repaired laptop and am about to post a poem I read Mum’s funeral, which I developed from an old poem.
I hope you are all well and look forward to reading your poems once everything is back to normal – I’m reinstalling virus software at the moment!
Hello Kim! Hope everything is back to normal with your laptop and software ~ Me, I let hubby handle and worry that, smiles ~
Hugs and take care ~
Thank you, Grace. I’m having a few teething problems with the laptop but it seems to be OK at the moment. I’m looking forward to getting back to regular writing. Kim xxx
Hi All…late to the pub…Wonderful poem Grace. Thurs is a more difficult night for me as I teach until late. Last night I traveled. Here I am now landed and reflective. My piece is different. Open. I hope you enjoy.
Love what you shared Paul ~ It takes a lot of courage to share your journey ~
Hi catching up before heading to bed this Friday Night.
Catching up the latecomers too Bjorn ~
Thanks to all those who are visiting and commenting ~
Hi Dverse team. Nan Mykel emailed to ask advice about her link on blenza. When I click on her name it sends me to ‘page not found’, yet when I visit her site the blog she wanted to link is clearly there. Would it be the blenza site or is it something to do on her side? I can’t take part this week but thanks for all the hard work by the hosts.
Thanks for letting you know Petru! Have a good weekend !
I always miss this! See you soon.
To all concerned
I have read several of the poem postings and was impressed both by the poems and your website and the reader comments. It would be wonderful to be able to become part of your community and hopefully make my own contributions to your collection of poems.
However when I clicked on the link to see how best I could post a link to my poem, the link (Mr. Linky) took me to a page where poem links are posted, without indication on how best to achieve that. If I understood the notice correctly, submissions are scheduled this Thursday at 3:00 pm EST. Now that would be 4:00 am in the Philippines where I currently reside, rather late for me. Does this time extend beyond the announced time? If not, kindly advise as to what I should do to be able to post. The e-mail contact of dversepoets@gmail.com. did not work from my gmail.
Thank you kindly for your assistance,
