Welcome to our OpenLinkNight folks! This is your opportunity to link 1 poem of your choice as this is no prompt-day. For those who missed the Mr Linky deadline the past week or this Tuesday’s poetics about “postcard poem”, this is also your opportunity to share your poem. I also want to remind you that our Haibun Monday is still open the whole week.
I would like to share a poem by Naomi Shihab Nye with her poem “Kindness,” found in Words Under Words: Selected Poems.
KINDNESS
Before you know what kindness really is
you must lose things,
feel the future dissolve in a moment
like salt in a weakened broth.
What you held in your hand,
what you counted and carefully saved,
all this must go so you know
how desolate the landscape can be
between the regions of kindness.
How you ride and ride
thinking the bus will never stop,
the passengers eating maize and chicken
will stare out the window forever.
Before you learn the tender gravity of kindness,
you must travel where the Indian in a white poncho
lies dead by the side of the road.
You must see how this could be you,
how he too was someone
who journeyed through the night with plans
and the simple breath that kept him alive.
Before you know kindness as the deepest thing inside,
you must know sorrow as the other deepest thing.
You must wake up with sorrow.
You must speak to it till your voice
catches the thread of all sorrows
and you see the size of the cloth.
Then it is only kindness that makes sense anymore,
only kindness that ties your shoes
and sends you out into the day to mail letters and purchase bread,
only kindness that raises its head
from the crowd of the world to say
It is I you have been looking for,
and then goes with you everywhere
like a shadow or a friend.
To join us for Thursday’s OpenLinkNight, which happens every other week, here’s how to join:
See you at the poetry trail. ~Grace~
Hi Grace! Hi everyone else….LOVE that introd.poem, Grace. Speaks truth to random power. It’s Earth Day soon, and I posted a longgg poem for me…I don’t like long poems and avoid them, but this one was first hand experience and there was too much to say. Will be reading tonight which is good as I usually can’t get around until the morrow. I am hungry for poets tonight!
Thanks for joining us Jane ~ I am hitting the poetry trail now ~
Hi everyone! Happy OLN ~ I am still in the office but will get back to you and your lovely poems ~ Thanks for joining us ~
Hi, everyone, what a lovely person reading a lovely poem – I absolutely adore Naomi Shihab Nye! It’s Volunteer Recognition Day in the UK (although really every day should be that, but never mind), so kindness seems particularly appropriate.
Her poems are strikingly beautiful ~ Thanks for joining us Marina ~
Nice poem by Nye. I enjoyed the audio of it. Thanks for hosting today, Grace.
I so enjoyed the poetry reading so I thought of sharing it ~ Thanks for your visits to most if not all of the linked poems ~
I truly love the kindness poem and feel that the poem is like a comfortable well-worn jumper on a freezing cold night. I remember once when very very ill in hospital ravaged by fever and the kindness of a wonderful nurse who tended me every minute she could offer with cold compresses on my forehead it was the most humbling and welcomed kindness another human being could offer me in those hours of need. I have been fortunate to have been blessed by many kindnesses in my life and I am truly glad of them all. XXX
To be the receiving end of kindness is indeed a humbling experience ~ I like to share and move that forward to others, if I can ~ Thanks for joining us ~
Hi everyone! Thank you for hosting, Grace, and for sharing the poem – I first heard it when I did the kindness workshop last year and it is a wonderful poem. I really don’t know what to link up this evening but it will be something I wrote this week from a prompt. I’ll be back to post when I’ve decided!
In the meantime, I would like a fortifying, non-alcoholic drink please – long, cool and fruity, if possible! 🙂
Hello everyone and thank you for hosting tonight Grace! I love Naomi’s work and thank you for sharing the audio here. I have linked one of my Earth Day contributions tonight and will swing by in a moment to read :o)
I am looking forward to Earth day ~ Thanks for joining us ~
Hello everyone. I have a brief moment of coverage before entering the shade again. Have seen winter again, and now I’m ready for some spring. I will not link up anything tonight but stay safe and enjoy poetry.
So nice of you to drop by Bjorn ~ See you next week ~
Cheers for hosting Grace and I do so love Naomi’s poem for its beautiful wisdom.
My offering is a rant…
Kind regards
Anna :o]
Rant away Anna ~ OLN is open for all the voices of the poets ~
Lovely poem Grace. We should all be kind to one another. But, we aren’t. I know I am not although I try to be.
Always a good reminder, since most and more us are selfish ~ I am glad you liked the poem and reading Toni ~
Beautiful poem Grace. Thanks for sharing. Am linking a poem from earlier in the week this evening to give my 30/30 brain a wee respite. 10 days to go. Happy OLN night all.
10 days, yes we are almost close to the finish line ~ Good luck with that Paul ~
Hello everyone, am sharing a poem that I have forgotten about, from 2011.
Thanks for joining us Therisa ~
Hi all. Been feeling a bit glum lately, lots of dark in my words. So this I offer as a bit of fun.
Fun poems are well, fun ! Thanks for joining in ~
A beautiful day here, sunny and warm. Sharing a poem about singing for others, but it applies to all of us.
Give us some of your sunny weather ~ Today its been dreary raining, but spring is here ~
Thank you for this opportunity to share, since I missed the link-up for the postcard poem. Also, I enjoyed the poem by Naomi Shihab Nye. It is very true that to know kindness, you must also know sadness, and after you know deep sorrow, “it is only kindness that makes sense anymore.”
All poems are welcome for OpenLinkNight ~ That line also hit me but I am practising kindness everyday, even if I have not known deep sorrow yet ~
Glad to be back at OLN–thanks for hosting, Grace. I went back and responded to Mish’s prompt about nature’s point of view. So many good prompts that I’ve missed these few months.
So lovey to see you again Victoria ~ I love that prompt by Mish too ~
Happy to get an opportunity to share a fairly recent poem that I previously gave no fanfare to but really enjoy.
Thanks for joining us Rachel ~
Hello everyone! Is there a way of deleting a poem so I can re-post it? I want to do this because the link back to dVerse did not work when I first posted. After pasting the re-named link onto the body of the poem, it did work on the second attempt. If my poem cannot be deleted, I will try to do better next time. Thanks!
The link to your poem is working. The poem is Quality Lives, correct? Thanks for joining us ~
Love Nye’s poem. I posted an old Sevenling for OLN.
I am glad you like featured poem ~ We are all about appreciation of poetry ~
I am hoping to have the time to try some of the more demanding exercises but grateful for Open Nights all the same.
Thanks for joining us Ros ~
Hey everyone,
I have been rather caught up with NaPoWriMo this month and haven’t had the time or energy for anything else. But I will be back in May!❤️ Sharing my poem “Untitled (murder of crows) hope you all like it 🙂
Thanks for joining in Sanaa ~
I could listen to her voice all night. It’s mesmerizing.
I am glad you liked the poetry reading ~
I’m so sick and out of it, I totally thought today was Thursday! 🙂
Just made it under the wire! Been bike riding so outside most of the time. It’s a lovely spring out there! Happy Earth Day dVerse!
I’ll be around to read this weekend. Group hug!
