Hello fellow poets! This is Michelle Beauchamp or “Mish” as you may know me in the dVerse community. It is my pleasure to host this week’s haibun prompt.
Haibun? For those who are not familiar with this Japanese poetry form, the haibun is a combination of prose and haiku. It begins with a non-fictional narrative, a true account written in present tense consisting of concise paragraphs. Please limit to no more than three. The prose is followed by a traditional haiku which gives reference to a season, bringing another dimension or layer to the prose.
The theme? Think hometown. Bring to life a scene or experience from your hometown, whether it be a childhood or adult memory. Reminisce. Relive a moment. Describe to us this place you are originally from using sensory details. If you wish, you may choose to view your hometown through new eyes, the way it feels and looks to you now when you visit.
I leave you with some memoirs of Ed Sheeran’s hometown.
If you are new to dVerse, here are the instructions to join in:
-
- Post your haibun to your blog.
- Click on Mr. Linky. Add your name and a direct url to your poem.
- Drop into the pub to say hello.
- Read and comment on other people’s work.
- Share via your favorite social media platforms.
- Have fun!

Hello friends and happy Monday… I hope you have some lovely memories from your hometown… I was pulled back to the the times I worked in a shipyard during summers.
Mish said:
That sounds like an interesting job, Bjorn. Will be by soon to read. 🙂

Sorry, MIsh. I didn’t think about a theme attached. Toni Spenser introduced me to haibun and though I am very familiar with other Japanese forms, this one was one I wasn’t. My haibun is personal: art imitating life. If you think
it isn’t ‘theme’ I will just post it as ‘non-dverse’. Thanks. Haibun has a really long history and a fascinating one at that.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
So nice to have you here… the theme of hometown can be stretched quite wide I think 🙂
ladynyo said:
Thank you, Bjorn! I just thought of a haibun that is very much theme. I will try and post it. Thank you, Bjorn, for your graciousness.
Mish said:
Hi ladynyo…I haven’t started on the trail to read yet, but I agree with Bjorn that the idea of “hometown” can reach to many moments of our past….and please, feel free to write more than one! Thanks for joining in.
And yes…Toni has a great knowledge of this form. 🙂

Thank you, Mish.

Good evening Mish, Bjorn and all you dVerse Poets out there. I haven’t been to my hometown since my mum died last year and I don’t think i’ll be going back. But I still have fond memories.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
I don’t go often either… but my sister and mother still lives there…. so I will go there again. But it has changed so much.
Mish said:
I can understand that, Kim. We can always visit these places in our minds and beautiful poetry can grow from those fond memories. 🙂

Hi Mish. Great prompt. I’ve penned my Haibun but as I’ve been travelling all day, I need some chill time. Back to read and comment later.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
I will soon need some sleep time… it’s really late here.
Mish said:
No worries, Paul. I can relate to that. 🙂

Thanks for hosting, Mish! Mine was a home-farm with town being far away.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
I think that hometown and where you grew up will be the same time… liked your “big hill”….
Mish said:
My pleasure, Frank. Thanks for joining in. 🙂

Hi Mish! A great prompt😊. I deviated slightly as I have many hometowns and far too many tales…..so I packaged my haibun to reflect this. I’m back and forth – so will catch up with the others soon. No time for a drink tonight. Raincheck?
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
How interesting… I must rush over.
Mish said:
That sounds wonderful, Vivian. Can’t wait to read. 🙂

Hi, Mish. I had a weekend with my baby brother, so my home town was in my mind today. Excellent timing.
Mish said:
Fantastic! So glad the timing was spot on.

I forgot to mention, I’ve seen that castle on the hill up close. I did some of my teacher training at Framlingham, long before Ed Sheeran was heard of. It’s a very nice place.
Mish said:
Oh I would love to visit a castle like that…. I think of the views, the history and photo opportunities. How wonderful, Kim.

Hello everyone! Sorry for my usual late arrival to the pub (due to my work hours).
Thank you, Bjorn as always for tending bar. 🙂
Looking forward to a glimpse into everyone’s hometown.

Ha, this is one of those tricky subjects for me, as I feel rooted in several places at once – or perhaps in none. My haibun took a bit of a weird turn.
Mish said:
So glad you came by to join in with us, MarinaSofina. I think either perspective works for this prompt. It was not my intention to limit the idea of ” hometown” to define a place of residence, long term but instead any memory or scene that stands out from a place we have lived.I should have clarified that. Looking forward to reading your haibun.😊

It’s not too late, qbit. The haibun prompt runs all week. You should be able to enter it into Mr. Linky.
qbit said:
You’re right!! Sometimes Mr. Linky “closes” when dVerse moves to the next prompt. I guess that is just sometimes. OK, linked up!
