Hello Friends,
Today it’s Open Link Night again summer is here and drinks are cold. It’s also time for us to take a little summer break, I know many will welcome some time off to recharge, read and perhaps get some editing done.
Summer is blue in many ways. I get moody and switch between happiness and melancholy. In some parts of the world summer is sweltering heat, while up in the north it’s a time of light never ceasing.
How is it for you and what are you going to spend your time off?
Myself I plan to go offline and bring books to read. Catching up on novels and drink water from springs. Gaze at mountains and sleep in a tent.
Are you gonna read something too, novels or poetry?
Summer shower by Emily Dickinson
A drop fell on the apple tree,
Another on the roof;
A half a dozen kissed the eaves,
And made the gables laugh.
A few went out to help the brook,
That went to help the sea.
Myself conjectured, Were they pearls,
What necklaces could be!
The dust replaced in hoisted roads,
The birds jocoser sung;
The sunshine threw his hat away,
The orchards spangles hung.
The breezes brought dejected lutes,
And bathed them in the glee;
The East put out a single flag,
And signed the fete away.
When we get back on July 16 we will try to do a bit of celebration for our seven years active (remember the number seven, it can be useful for the prompts.
Later in the autumn we are considering to do some small changes. What do you want to see from the pub? Anything you want to see less or something we should do more?
Please don’t run and just link your poem, take part in the discussion and have fun.
But as usual, tonight is the night to leave any one poem for us to read. It could be about summer, it could be a prompt you have missed.
Remember to revisit and read other poem. Leave a comment to help us all to get better…
Ah, Bjorn, it’s almost too hot to poet here – 31 degrees today – not our usual summer weather at all! I’m not that good at taking a break, but I’m looking forward to some long evenings with no call to the computer, an ice cold G&T and some gentle conversation. Maybe a little light reading…though tonight it’s all about the football! Unavoidable round here.
Ha.. we had our night tonight. I read that some say that a win for England is not the highest priority…
well, if we lose I think we get an easier group…that’s a bad attitude, though. I’m just pleased they’re playing well. I did feel a bit sorry for Germany, though…it’s all far too emotional for me!
Good evening everyone… what can I serve you tonight?
Iced wine, smiles ~
Good morning, everyone! Thank you for hosting, Björn. I’ll have anything with Cointreau in it, if you would be so kind. I know it’s 8:30am, thank you very much, but I’ve got a long day ahead of me and need to fortify.
Thank you for the song Bjorn it was soothing to the soul. I love dVerse and how it teaches new forms of poetry to learn but I am still new to dVerse so I will not comment on that discussion. I am however grateful for all the wonderful poets I meet here! Is Open Link Night only open for today? Much Love, Deborah
Open Night is a bit strange but we are open for two nights… so there is 48 hours and any one poem is welcome…
Thank you Bjorn!
Good Afternoon, Poets! Thanks for pubtending today, Bjorn! I’ll take my usual bottle of burgundy! We’re off to Portugal this coming week to tour the country and stay with my sister-in-law! 🙂
Meanwhile, the only dog I have in the FIFA World Cup hunt is Portugal. They face Uraguay Monday Morning. Viva Portugal!
Ha.. what a great timing for a break then. I assume it will be a crazy night for you in Portugal… Sweden will face Switzerland on Tuesday….
I’ll miss the excitement–our flight departs Monday Evening. LOL!
I live in Switzerland… but I’m rooting for both countries. 😉 Not sure how that works goal-wise.
Hola!
I hope everyone is doing well.
It’s too hot ( much more humid!) here in India too.
Though, now the monsoons are here for relief ( yayy!! ).
I too am eager to read some classic novels I have on my mind.
Good day to all.
~🌸
Classic Novels.. that’s a great choice, and I can fill my book reader with an infinite number (almost)
Haha…true, there seems to be so many that I want to read!!
Good evening, all! I can’t wait to partake of the poetry on offer!
It’s a great buffet of words tonight.
I have come with a hunger!
Just had a rain shower coming in…
Decided to write a Quadrille from one of the prompts I missed. It’s been a crazy couple of months and I’ve missed the dVerse prompts, but there just hasn’t been time to write or read. I did want to let you know, though, that my Quadrille that you included in the Anthology is a finalist in a poetry contest. I’ll find out in August if I won. 🙂
What a great thing.. hope you wil win
That is wonderful news, Linda! Congrats!
for the last lunar month, have been devotedly following Jilly’s Jim Harrison prompts and feel I deserve a drink now – so hot here in London so make it a long gin and tonic please
Excellent choice – I have some truly perfect gin, a divine tonic
am just in time to say goodbye too and thank you to all for your comments and support – offline in a tent is the perfect way to make the most of a summer break Bjorn but I will be city bound for most of the time 😦
More poetry readings for me during the 2 week break ~ Thanks for sharing the music and poem by Emily ~ See you in a couple of weeks ~
Wonderful things to do during a break..
Great music choice! They’re favorites in our house. Today I wrote a quick poem inspired by a bush bursting with yellow flowers. As for summer I’m starting my book. I bought Word and everything. Figure if I keep saying it it’ll keep me accountable. 😉 I enjoy the writing prompts and sharing at the pub as is…because I’m old and boring? Or thrive on stability.
What a wonderful plan… we did a lot on this when we did our anthology, and there are great things to learn when you come to the actual printing and putting it on Amazon.. The feeling of holding your own book in your hand is wonderful
D’Versed has an anthology? Nice! I’m planning to submit to publishing houses. Rejection is character building 😉
🙂 we self-publshed an anthology on Amazon… great fun to do.
Sumer time and the Livin’ is easy,,, one of my favorites.
I would like to take this time to thank all of you who run d’verse for your great blog. When I first came on d’verse I was simply posting free verse and some rhyming poems. Here I have expanded my limited view of poetry and learned so much from all of your great learning prompts. I especially love the post you did on Ceasura the silent spaces and pauses in poetry. Before I come to d’verse one of my friends on facebook asked me, “Don’t you ever use punctuation in your poetry. At that point I had not. I think the pause lines and limited punctuation makes the flow so much better and easier to interpret. Thank you all for teaching me about poetry.
Thank you for the feedback… we are all learning, and for us as bar-tenders the time spent on researching a topic is a great one. I thought that maybe we should compile it all into a small booklet of tools on how to write… maybe together with some of the poetry written for the prompt.
What a FUN idea! A dVerse Manual of sorts 🙂 (literally sorts)
Sounds like a good idea. The great examples you give for your different forms is what made it possible for me to do them.
I’ve only just joined, so will miss the sharing. Definitely so much to learn here. Enjoy the summer break all. My husband and I have been nomads for a year – living in a 41′ motor home – and will be moving back into a house in August. (Still planning to travel for the winter months). It has been a fantastic journey, and I look forward to the next chapter.
Just added my poem – more in context of my former post – having missed the suggestion that we write about summer. Whoops – that’s how the brain works these days….
I would love to travel around Europe in an RV (or around North America, if we ever go back, or around Australia, if we ever make it there). My husband wants to sail around the world, so we have the same romantic idea, but different means of transportation. 😊 Good luck to you with this next chapter of your life!
I think being a bit nomad is something that attracts many of us… for me it has been mostly with a backpack on foot or maybe a kayak. It fits very well for shorter vacations. Maybe one day we will look at ways to extend it longer the day we retire.
It’s amazing – recommend it to anyone.
It sounds amazing!
Well I am such a rare visitor here anymore. Can’t really explain why. Texas summer is on us and yes it was 100 degrees F today and felt like 106 (what is the difference?). I wrote the poem I posted in the 90s when I was attending a writer’s workshop. One of my fellow poets was reading Seamus Heaney who had just won the Nobel if I remember correctly. I wrote this poem Damned in response to Heaney’s poem Limbo. It haunts me still. Oddly this kind of thing was to blow up into a big scandal for the Catholic church in the ensuing years, but nothing much has changed as the “me, too” movement is now in full swing.
I am back involved in the administrative life of USFigure skating. We are now being required to do safesport training to try to keep our athletes safe from predators in and out of the sport. It’s a heavy burden.
So I think I’ll have something light in the bar this evening – a Perrier with Pomegranite juice will suffice. I will try to read poems this weekend in between trying to sort out spreadsheets and details of money. I didn’t know they’d make me treasurer!
See you on the rounds y’all.
Nice to hear from you Gay… it sounds like you have lots to do. Both treasury and taking care of a sport that is potentially filled with predators. I hope that society can help a lot by putting the shame where it belong.
Hello Gay,
What an interesting aspect of your life — to be involved in US Figure Skating. I still have fond memories of watching Dorothy Hammel (sp?) win at the Olympics and then, just a few days later, going out to get a Dorothy Hammel haircut! Remember those days? Or perhaps you’re too young for that! Do know, your work on making a sport safe in terms of physical/emotional etc abuse from predators is so very important and although I’m not involved in sport, thank you for your work!
Happy summer, everyone. The sweltering heat here does make me long for a windy autumn. Sorry to have missed so many actions in the past few months. Hope I’ll catch a second wind after the summer! 🙂
I know the feeling… the daily writing can be a burden. Hope for some colder winds to grace you.
Ah Colin — totally understand. For the past month, except when I’ve been tending pub, for some reason, my brain just wasn’t awake for poetry. But — I think it’s because I started to sleep in — as in till 8 or 9 AM (rejuvenated I am – never say retired). BUT — getting back to my early morning routine (5:30 or 6) and that’s when I LOVE to write and read. So — shall take this break and enjoy the journalling and writing for myself….and get back into the swing!
PS: Always enjoy seeing you here!
Thank you, Lillian. Now that the World Cup is over, we East Asians can really sleep at night. 🙂
I too am planning to do the same! I missed so many opportunities, so glad that it’s still going!
Good morning, Bjorn and dVerse poets around the world. I’m sorry I’m late to the party but exam marking is taking its toll and the deadline is on Monday so I’ve been burning the midnight oil. I’m going to miss the bar over the two week break but I have to do a lot of catching up on life (cleaning mainly!) and decide whether to enrol for that Creative Writing MA with the Open University before it’s too late. Have a wonderful two weeks everyone and I look forward to seeing all the ‘old, familiar faces’ as well as some new when we return.
Hello Kim, great to have you here. Exam writing sounds like such a burden but I hope it also brings some inspiration from the young people’s writing.
Joining creative writing course is one of the best things I have done… and it led to other projects and writing. I have yet to dare to go for a novel, but I doubt it will happen. For me short stories are just about enough.
hmmmmm after reading Kim’s comment and yours….I wonder if the pub would be interested in being a kind of resource for online tools? Having a header for that….and folks can just put in ideas etc….I remember the awe when, through someone else’s post, I found out about the online rhyme tools! And I’d love to know what online course Kim is taking….just a thought.
I’m sorry I didn’t stay to read yesterday and I still haven’t got round to reading and commenting, but marking on screen really makes my eyes sore. I’ll try to catch up tomorrow. It’s going to be so strange with no dIverse for two whole weeks! Than goodness there’s the anniversary to look forward to. Have a great break, although I’m sure I’ll see you on Toads!
Thought I would catch up; it’s been a while after all.
Summers have rather eased off here for a while, after a month of 42C average temperatures, with the onset of monsoon rains.
Hope everyone’s doing well. I look forward to reading the many verses and voices.
Happy Summer Break, dVerse folks! 🙂
-HA
So great to see you hear Anmol… as you say it’s been a while. Hope you find your way back again when we open in two weeks.
Here with my cup of joe this morning. Will be nice to have a break — perhaps I’ll take it from the news as well! I plan to use the break to re-establish my early morning routine of coffee, journalling, reading and writing. For some reason, that’s gone by the by lately and I miss this quiet time in the morning. Have created a reading list…hope to delve into some good mysteries during this time. Suggestions anyone?
Recently I read a book called Sometimes I lie. An interesting premise, and a good mystery. Try it maybe you will like! I never had a morning routine since the last seven or eight years. I wish I had the energy to get up at 4.30 and study like how I did back in the school days. Those days were amazing, even if I spent the most of the time snoozing between the pages! Do you have any suggestions to wake up early for lazy owl?
I will have a lot of reading to do, smiles ~ Catch up with everyone on the poetry trail in a bit ~ Enjoy the break poets ~
June is the end of summer here in India. I thought I would remember every summer back in school, because summer breaks were the craze. Here I am, no summer to remember for the last six years! Sucks how work doesn’t have a mandatory summer vacation!
Here summer means hiding inside, so it feel super weird when people want to go to beach on a hot summer afternoon, like who is that crazy person???
Ha… and I live on the opposite side where summer is the only time I can go out…
Oh this weird little sphere we call home!
I hope you will link up a poem as well Jay 🙂
I’m planning to in a bit , just got home from work. God I loved the commenting section of this post, so I got a bit lost. Since this is the last opportunity for the two weeks, I better spin something nice!
🙂 and then we will be back in full force… glad to see you…
It’s my pleasure. I’m waiting for the impact!
Sorry I’m slow making rounds will do as soon as I figure out some spread sheets that have me stumped in another area of my life. Thanks for understanding!
Thank you for hosting, Bjorn. I have missed a few weeks because I unplugged and went to Mexico to visit friends–and drank the water–and came home sick. Thankfully, I’m almost back to normal now. On the bright side, I’ve read four novels recently, and now the fire is burning hot to begin writing one of my own. In fact, the document is open, and I’ve written down a couple title options and the synopsis of the story. So I guess you could say I have finally broken ground on my dream!
Regarding proposed changes to d’Verse, as one who only pops in now and again, I don’t feel as though I’m in a position to make suggestions, not that I have any to make. But I will say that change is good, although most of us balk at it, for we are creatures of habit. But whatever you do here, I intend to become more involved. I have even written it into my blogging calendar. I’ve learned quite a lot from the folks here at d’Verse, and the poems that people share here are among the best I’ve seen on WordPress. They truly inspire me to be a better person and a better writer. Thank you and all the hosts for all that you do. –Abigail
Thank you Abigail .. sounds very good. The way we run the bar is what makes this fun… and also what we can learn from each other… look forward to see you around when we open again.
Bjorn, thanks for this video of Louis and Ella. Has to be the most beautiful duet ever. Their voices and his playing..absolutely perfect and soul-filled. I saw Satchmo perform in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in Africa Hall. Can you believe it? He happened to give a concert there while I was living there and teaching. That was certainly a main experience of a lifetime. Unfortunately, Ella wasn’t there, though.
Okay. Disclaimer. I just did a bit of research and saw that Satchmo died in 1971. I didn’t go to Ethiopia until 1973. It was Duke Ellington I saw there. Another great. Guess I need to research my memory more before saying or posting anything!
Hey guys –
I’m new here, but I really love the vibe on this thread. It’s really motivating to hear about how other’s get into the spirit of things and find their writing inspirations. I’ll definitely be stopping by more often. Nice to “meet” you all.
Nice to meet you!!!! Our blog opens again on July 16 and we hope you will stop by for a week of celebration!
Awesome! I’ll be sure to mark my calendar 🙂
See you on Monday, July 16!!!!
