Hey all, tonight it’s time for August’s Open Link Night. This is Björn again — and I’m reporting from Sweden. And now as we enter autumn here in the Northern Hemisphere we have the best year ever for mushrooms. Last week we picked more porcini than we ever did before, and there’s yet more out there. After that we will have yellowfoot and other late season mushroom. I’m far from being a mushroom expert, but there are some species that are easy to recognize. Hunting for mushroom is a very special experience, the search, spotting the signs, finding them wormstung, and at the end coming up with an evening’s worth of cleaning, frying (or maybe drying) is something that’s currently filling my weekends. In Sweden we have the right to pick mushrooms and berries wherever we want (except right next to houses), so this can really fill our pantries. There are also tomatoes to be harvested, and I have friends who have an autumn full of that work that still bring the satisfaction of having picked it all ourselves. Tell me, what’s your harvest? and for you in the southern hemisphere, tell us a little about your spring.
Tonight there’s no prompt (but you’re free to write about harvests). You can link up one poem, this is a night to enjoy anything our wide world of poetry might offer.
- Enter a link directly to your poem and your name by clicking Mr Linky below
- There you will find links to other poets, and more will join during the next 33 hours
- Read and comment on other poet’s work, we all go here to have our poems read
- Promote your site and poetry you like on social media of your choice

brian miller said:
ha the wrong ones will have you seeing visions…
just stay away from the ones on the cow paddies…smiles.
billgncs said:
the bad one and the good ones look too similar to me !
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
There are those that are quite easy.

claudia said:

claudia said:
just kidding of course…. you have to be sure that you pick the right ones…
billgncs said:

Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
Alas no truffles here, and actually truffles are not free to pick everywhere
billgncs said:
When my daughter went to France for the summer with my sister she came back and said “I finally found a mushroom I like, it’s called a truffle.”
I said, “good luck with that”
claudia said:
haha… so she picked the most expensive one… they cost a fortune… usually they will slice it very thinly over pasta or so… you pay per slice…not kidding….
billgncs said:
wow!
claudia said:
over here we have lots of chanterelles at the moment…
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
Yellow foot are the late chanterelles 😉 love those too
claudia said:
i think we have but you need a pig to find them…
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
Or a dog 😉
billgncs said:
poor pig – probably that’s a sad job – find the truffles and not allowed to eat them.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
Poor piggie

Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:

brian miller said:

No, Björn. For me autumn usually means tomatoes, zucchini and apples. Mushrooms remind me of my grandfather. As a biology professor (and pharmacist), he knew what we could pick up or not. Then my mother would make a mushroom omelet for dinner. It seemed like the best dish in the world.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
I just learn a few that are perfectly safe.. Probably we will go out today again..

Hey everyone–great to be here for OLN. My piece fits with the topic of conversation today. I missed picking blueberries this summer because we didn’t hit our regular place…but the blackberries are coming in. I love this time of year in our hemisphere too.
brian miller said:
blueberries would be nice….harvested a lot of grape…made some jam…and pears…we did the same…but i def love my berries….
lupitatucker said:
So nice to see y’all … It’s been a while since ihave had a chance to come by and participate .. but Ive wanted to! Typing this only phone is a little frustrating as I lost my first comment. I have been harvesting a little bit from seeds planted long ago, my contribution this week is one of those fruit. My most exciting news, though, is that I am going to the Dodge Poetry Festival in NJ this October, which I am very excited about! I’m just going as an audience member, not a presenter, of course. Thanks for stopping by to read, and I promise to get to each poem today when I get in front of my computer, ad doing this by phone is quite tedious 🙂
brian miller said:
woot…have fun at the festival…that would be a blast to be a part of…audience member or otherwise….
lupitatucker said:
Yes! If anyone else is going I’d like to know. It’s be cool to have a dverse meet up, and the perfect place to do it!
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
I’d like to join, but alas a little bit far away
brian miller said:
would def be cool.

Oh, this season of the year is so wonderful for those fresh vegetables. Bjorn, I envy you finding all those mushrooms. I do know one man who goes into the woods here and finds them. He knows what he is doing. I’d be afraid to pick mushrooms & eat them. Here I am growing only tomatoes & fresh basil. The first basil went to seed, so I got some more this morning. But at the farm markets right now there is really a banquet of fresh produce to choose from. I will really be sad when, at the end of October, these markets will come to an end. Off to a market in a few minutes…actually.
brian miller said:
i love farmers markets…and i guess soon many will switch over to gourds and pumpkins…as the season draws to a close…so many people to see there too…enjoy your time mary….
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
If we just could have more of that.. But I guess picking up your own mushrooms in the wood is a great compensation

If our evolutionary process has led to me having to forage for my food, then I fear for our future. I give up on microwaving my food if the instructions contain more than three steps. Though Wifey tried growing onions and tomatoes this year. That was a pretty good salad.
Basically, don’t pick me for humanity’s final Bio-dome unless you need a videogame expert to help you with boss battles.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
Ha, i hope that wifey prepares it well for you Barry – personally I love to pick my own mushrooms
brian miller said:
ha. boss battles can be hard, so we might find a place for you in the ship…smiles…if you are good at games your visio-spatial skills are good too and that will come in handy…

Like Claudia, the time differences disrupt my delicate balance, my reliance on habit, noon PT is 3pm at the Pub, or some shit. OLN coming less often, I just forget that some hosts are kind enough to open early. Thanks, by the way, for linking me up on MTB last. My computer crashed at 11:25 am, and I couldn’t get back on the internet until 2 pm, and wow, I had already been linked in; nice instincts on your part; much appreciated, folks.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
No problems 😉 easy enough Glenn
Kathryn Dyche Dechairo said:
My husband studied mushrooms when he was at Berkeley and I’ve found myself fascinated when I come across them on woodland walks. Not confident enough to pick ones to eat though. Humidity has been crazy here but hopeful that Autumn is on its way soon. 🙂

Once you learn – there are plenty of food out there

Our late summer drought has put a quick end to the garden – but still late peaches at the orchard – what would summer be without peaches? But we are looking forward to crisp autumn days and cooler nights – already leaves starting to change –

Hey Bjorn! You’re becoming the landlord of the pub – glad to finally make it in this Saturday night. I’m offering up something completely “new” as the Python boys would say. This is for “the World” card of my major arcana poems and I’m not sure it qualifies as a poem. Wouldn’t blame anyone for skipping it. But would love some feedback as I’ve just now finished writing it. Thanks everyone. Have a great labor day.

Hi all. just wanted to say how I enjoyed your description of mushroom picking. I have never heard of doing this. Would be afraid I’d pick a poisonous one by mistake. What fun it would be though. I do have a brother-in-law who manages a mushroom farm but that is a whole different thing. If I ever come to Scandinavia, I want to try this!
