Hello everyone! Welcome to Open Link Night. Mish here as your host.
Is it really October? Why is it that months and even years fly by the ***er we get? I will not say that word! Time and seasons do not pause for us and here we are, rolling like pumpkins into fall. No stopping us now, I’m afraid.
Autumn brings change but of course depending on your location, these range from slight to more significant. In my locale here in Southern Ontario, Canada, fall brings with it gorgeous colours, reflections of summer and a sense of nesting as we brace for those blustery days of winter. Our seasons are quite distinct and we tend to celebrate each one as a transition in our lives. In the fall, many of us will buy mums to decorate our gardens, rake leaves, pick apples, bake pies and buy supplies for Thanksgiving dinners, which take place here in Canada on the second Monday of October. This is a time of gratitude for all of our blessings including a wonderful harvest of vegetables and fruits.
The following poem by Carl Sandburg is a reminder of the brevity of fall.
Autumn Movement
I cried over beautiful things knowing no beautiful thing lasts.
The field of cornflower yellow is a scarf at the neck of the copper
sunburned woman, the mother of the year, the taker of seeds. The northwest wind comes and the yellow is torn full of holes,
new beautiful things come in the first spit of snow on the northwest wind,
and the old things go, not one lasts.-Carl Sandburg-

Welcome to the pub! 🙂
Hope your day is going well and that wherever you are, the weather is kind. I am serving up some pumpkin spice lattes or if you’re feeling a little more adventurous, perhaps a cranberry martini. Your poetry is the special of the day!

My pleasure as always. I haven’t bought a turkey yet. Hoping to find a tiny one for our tiny family. Just my mom and one son here, the other will stay up near Peterborough, ON. Will be quiet…but on the upside…lots of leftovers to make soup. 🙂

“New beautiful things come in the first spit of snow is such a lovely line.”
Thank you for posting this lovely poem.

Hi there!
That is my favourite line of the poem as well. Glad you enjoyed it. Open Link Night always has an eclectic feel to it. Lots of surprises at every turn of the poetry trail. Thanks for coming back to join us again. 🙂

Thank you, Grace. These photos are from a little getaway with my mother. We stopped at every fruit and vegetable stand along our path. I am thankful for this weather….amazing for October. 🙂

Greetings Mish & All…
It’s been a while…. The truth is Summer rather ran away with me – along with an intoxicating time spent on the Croatian coast, swimming in such sparkling clear waters!
But now, as Autumn begins at home, here is my very latest piece only just released this week on my website.
As ever, comments and/or personal responses always very welcome and much appreciated… Hope you enjoy and I am also really looking forward to catching up with everyone else’s new work later too…
I agree with Bjorn – the variety is the thing… And such quality too here…
Mish said:
Nice to see you, Scott. Looking forward to reading your latest. 🙂

For every one blogging on wordpress.com I found out that they have made an update that you should be aware of. As you know the name of the link contains the date… This used to be the date when the post was first posted. This has recently changed, so it will now change for every time your post is updated. This means that any post that is updated on another date than originally first published will automatically be wrong on Mr Linky… I have contacted WordPress on the issue, but in the meantime be careful if you update. Your link on Mr Linky might be wrong.
lillian said:
Does WP consider comments and our replies to comments as updates? That would really mess up Mr Linky as many of us read and comment and reply later – after we originally post. Or does that just include the actual post itself?
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
No comments are separate, but if I correct a spelling error tomorrow, the name of the link would change… extremely irritating… I realize why I had to correct a number of links on Tuesday on mr Linky.
Mish said:
So the name of the link, meaning the date? And does this affect the content of the post or just the name of the link. I’m sorry, Bjorn if I am not following all of this.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
In the name of your link there is a date… that date used to reflect the date of when it was originally published the date in the name will reflect the latest update (like correcting a spelling error)
lillian said:
Oh…that is annoying! Good to know….my guess is we should remind folks of this in the next several prompts days.

Since it is only just October, and this being England, Halloween has not yet kicked into full American style gear! But I don’t want to miss Open Night, so I am linking to my poem and piece from last year. It has pumpkins in it as well as another Spectre… hope you enjoy!
Mish said:
Hi Shaista and welcome to OLN. You can write to any topic that you wish. Halloween decorations and such are slowly appearing around my area. We celebrate Thanksgiving first in a few days here in Canada. Looking forward to reading your poem. Thanks so much for joining in! 🙂
Mish said:
Hmm..trying to follow this, Bjorn…wondering it this affected the publishing time for this OLN post. Did you have to correct it?
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
This one come up as 06 as it should… but if I do an update tomorrow the link will change… I find this very bothersome… but I might come back with an update when I know more.
Mish said:
Are you referring to an update of our own post or of the actual OLN post?
Thanks for looking into this for us. 🙂
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
Any post on wordpress that is updated on another day after its original publication…
Mish said:
Wow…thanks for the heads up, Bjorn.

Hi everyone!
I’m a bit late to the bar this evening and can only stay for a short while – I have a busy day tomorrow: listening to infants reading in the morning; hosting a school visit with a local storyteller at the library in the afternoon; and then, in the evening, being filmed reading poems about acts of kindness in war. So I need to get to bed early tonight.
I can see you are all gearing up for Thanksgiving, something we don’t celebrate over here. I have a few plans for Halloween, though, as the Writers’ Centre in Norwich is having a ghost story evening on 31st October.
Also, at this time of year, I love to walk on the beach and, as I’m involved in an on-line poetry school workshop on all things to do with the sea, I got to thinking about shore creatures. I’m not sure if I’m completely satisfied with the poem I’m posting, not as it stands, so all comments are welcome.
I hope everyone in the path of Matthew is keeping safe. I’m thinking of you all.
Kim x

Hello Kim…you have so much on your plate it made me dizzy just thinking about it! I am intrigued with “infants reading”.
I’m sure your poem is lovely. Will be around soon to read. 🙂

Hi Mish! Happy Autumn — love your photos. This is such a colorful time of year!
I did not realize you celebrated Thanksgiving — my guess is with no pilgrims though? 🙂
So Happy Thanksgiving in advance to you.
I just walked home from teaching my very last communications workshop — I rejuvenated in December 2012 but have gone in to teach two workshops a year since — and this year, decided enough is enough. So — enjoyed myself today, said goodbye to that part of my life and look forward to more reading, writing, travel etc. No more standing in front of a class — I had a good run and now it’s time to turn it over to someone else.
Shall get to my OLN reading tomorrow AM — with my cup of steamy coffee….but those pumpkin lattes sound mighty good! 🙂
Mish said:
Hey Lillian. Yes, our Thanksgiving is on Monday. One day. Not as much fuss as in the U.S. We celebrate the harvest and give thanks for our blessings. It is not looked at as a kick off to Christmas shopping etc. Basically, in many ways it is all about the turkey dinner! 🙂
And here’s a tidbit…the first Thanksgiving was celebrated in Canada. 😉
lillian said:
Another fact I did not know! I love the Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S….at least in our family. There is a huge family gathering in Chicago, with shirt-tail relatives…big dinner…much talking and laughter. I like this holiday also becase there there are no gifts — it is all about celebrating family. And…I absolutely REFUSE to combine it with Christmas and do not start decorating, shopping etc until the week after! Somehow the commercialism of holidays has “rushed” folks and stores have Christmas decorations and items out sometimes before halloween! UGH
Mish said:
I was blown away by my husband’s family Thanksgiving. He is American. Family and laughter is the best part, though. My family is incredibly small so it is a very simple day for me….except for the turkey dinner prep. 🙂

Wonderful prompt, Mish. Wonderful season, except here in the south it’s still summer. Sigh.

I’ll take your summer….any day. Actually we are experiencing some warm summer-like days right now. It is 78 F. at the moment. 🙂

Thank you for hosting tonight Mish and for sharing the beautiful Carl Sandburg poem. I am sharing a post I wrote in July which is a bit different from the haiku and haibun I write most of the time. I cannot stay long tonight and am praying everyone affected by Matthew will be safe.
Mish said:
Hello Xenia 🙂 Thanks for joining in. Glad you enjoyed the poem.
I think there are many prayers out there for those who may be in it’s path and we can never have too many prayers. Looking forward to reading your poem. 🙂

Hey y’all…new kid on the block here…just back form teaching a regular class and it has been a long day…I have dropped into my archive and pulled out an October 2013 poem for tonight’s open session. I’ll check and comment a few of yours tonight and then round em all off tomorrow all being well. So I think a single malt is in order now as this is after all a bar. One Laphroaig please bartender…hold the ice 😉
